    Reset Network Setup

    Hello All,

I have managed to mess up my network settings (it is a bit embarrassing how...)
Any way is there a way to do like a "factory" reset of my network set up so I can let Kubuntu rediscover things like it did when I first loaded it?
    Thanks,

    Craigbert

Network settings in Kubuntu are contained in a variety of configuration files. Some control interfaces, some control name resolution, some control routing. I hesitate to offer advice without a better understanding of what's broken.

OK...not one of my prouder moments of logical troubleshooting so please don't laugh so loud that I can hear you. ;-)

My router went on the blink. One computer was wirelessly streaming video at the time, but my laptop could not connect so I suspected something was wrong with it. I started "tinkering" around with things. So I installed / uninstalled different programs (wikd, Network Manager, for example) and that did not do as I expected. Then I started checking other devices and realized they could not connect wirelessly either. So I rebooted the router and everything started working fine. Except for my laptop.

So, I am currently running wikd instead of Network Manager. When booting up I keep getting the message "Waiting on network connection" and "Waiting 60 seconds more for network connection" (I am paraphrasing the messages, but that is pretty close). Needless to say my current boot time is double or triple what it normally is.

Then once I log on I can connect, but it is sssllllooooowwww.

So basically I would like to start from scratch as far as my network stuff goes and let Kubuntu re-discover and configure things like it did when I installed it.

      Does that help?
      Thanks,

      Craigbert

Yeah, we're all laughing because none of us have ever done anything like this...

Following on what Steve said: as we (including you, apparently ) don't really know what you've altered it's hard to troubleshoot. I would suggest starting by purging what you installed and re-install Network Manager. Not long ago, I would have suggested not installing it, but the last couple releases worked well for me. Basically, it just uses some scripts to set your name server, configure your devices, and launch your network.

Start with /var/lib/dpkg/info and see if there's a list of what you installed/uninstalled. Once you've done that, reboot and see what happens. If it's still messed up, post the responses to:

        ifconfig
        route

OK. I removed wicd and did sudo apt-get install network-manager
It seems to be seeing the plug fine, but it is not seeing my wireless NIC.

Here is the output from route:
          Kernel IP routing table

Here is the output from ifconfig:

Also, the GUI of Network-Manager does not seem to appear in the bottom right of the taskbar.
I see nm running as one of the processes (I think it is actually nmd).
My wireless card is turned on.
            Thanks,

You could always reinstall kubuntu-desktop. That should fix anything missing.

That, plus hunting down some left over wicd stuff did it!
