Printer wireless HP installation help requested

If I look at the list of wireless signals. my printer shows up as hpsetup but has a red shield beside it. If I tell networkmanager to connect to it it fails to set the IP address. It works in Windows Vista Home 64 bit.
Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

Have you looked at the printer section in System Settings?
Network Manager isn't where you would add a printer. If you can't see it in the Printer config, try installing the package hplip-gui which wich is a graphical front-end to HP's linux printer tools. Normally, if the wireless printer has already been set up elsewhere, it should show up automatically in System Settings, or at least be detected by the printing system.

Rats, I have temporarily get the printer from the other room and place it on the floor near the computer, so the USB cable will reach. That sort a defeats the point of using wireless. O well at least the carpet is very low pile, so it should be ok for a few minutes.

Doesn’t work. It can see the printer via the USB cable, but not its radio. Why can Windows see it but not Linux? Its an HP and HP is usually good with Linux.

I got it working! Not wireless but unlike windows I could set it up as network printer via my gateway.
