After installing Kubuntu 12.10 on a system previously running 12.04, I can no longer print. I have two printers connected and configured as they were before. One is a Canon iP4000 connected via USB, and the other is an Epson Color Stylus 860 workhorse connected via an HP Jetdirect print server. Kubuntu 12.10 was installed from DVD on a freshly formatted root partition, retaining only /usr/local and /home partitions from the previous install. When I attempt to print to either printer, I get the error message "The PPD version (5.2.9) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.7.". This despite the fact that the Gutenprint version installed is 5.2.9.

I have an IP4000 too. There's a (for me) new checkmark you can put in Systemsettings - > Printer (Reject print jobs). If you put that checkmark, the printer rejects all printings.
You're probably not that stupid, but one way or another I put that checkmark there and it took me about an hour to find out why the printer was found but didn't print...
Probably not, but maybe you put a checkmark there too? -
Do you have the libgutneprint2 package (and its depednencies) installed?
Check its version with:
apt-cache policy libgutenprint2

No printing in 12.10
Thank you, thank you, thank you Goeroeboeroe and Ken. I have been puddling around with my new install for past few hours on and off trying to get my printers to work as they did in 12.04 and for the life of me I did not note tht "Reject Print Jobs" as I obviously accepted defaults as I normally do for most of these things and as you pointed out - the good old system follows directions and doesn't print a cracker. I do not understand why it has this as default setting? Anyway thank you again as it has got me over that hurdle now - now off to the next :-) Have a great day

If it's a default setting, that should explain a lot. I don't remember putting a checkmark there too, but I can't imagine why the default setting would be 'Reject print jobs'. I mean: if you install a printer, you probably want to print, I guess.
Personally I don't understand the use of that setting anyway, but maybe there are circumstances it's useful. (A museum with printers and visitors not allowed to print? )Comment

Printing working partially
I'm having same type of problem: after updating Kubuntu 12.04 to 12.10, my good old printer (Brother DCP 117C configured like MFC210) that's worked since Kubuntu 8.10 refuses to print anything that's rotated 90 o (paper "lying down" instead of "standing up") - except in Wine. When using Wine my Windows application will change print-direction on the paper as usual (when I ask it to). I've looked in the system settings as indicated above, but found no wrong checkmarks. I have no idea whatsoever of what to do and where to look - has anybody got any suggestions?Comment
