firefox has no integration with apps on the downloader

I followed the instructions that were in the 12.04 forum on the topic and it worked.

I guess I am suprised that Kubuntu invests into working that blue shell ppa and not making the firefox install shortcut point to their hard work. Am I the only person confused by that?

I don't think we can do that or won't do that - blue shell is not kubuntu, btw, just a sponsor of various people/projects. It is their PPA, and though they probably support their packages, I do not think Kubuntu does. Again, Firefox is not the default browser. They could always do something with that installer for the future - UDS is a good place to discuss it, if such a thing is safe and allowable.

One point of concern is security updates for the browser. Ubuntu is pretty good at pushing those out - what if the PPA falls behind on that?

Personally, I think they should ditch the FF installer, there are other worthy browsers now on top of FF

Like what? In my opinion nothing comes close to Firefox. I have rekonq, Konqueror, Chromium, and several other browsers installed on my Kubuntu systems. They just can't do for me what Firefox does. And I don't think that's likely to change anytime soon.

Part of what makes Firefox so great is the extension ecosystem. The Firefox extensions I use are essential. Crucial. They speed up my workflow and help protect my privacy.

Chromium's extensions are not in the same class as Firefox's. Even Firefox extensions that have been ported to Chromium don't cut it. They're not as stable and features are missing.

I've noticed there are some add-ons in the Mozilla repository that improve Firefox for KDE. Couldn't the KDE distros band together and sponsor an add-on that keeps pace with the rapid release cycle so users can be spared the pain of having to deal with broken functionality? This is the kind of thing that really annoys a newbie.

Eliminating the Firefox installer will do absolutely nothing for the many people who want to use Firefox on Kubuntu.

You miss my point I think. Firefox is no longer the only good browser anymore. Do we need a special installer for each one?

It being is easy to use, having a trusted image, massive user base/demand and deep roots in web/opensource history are what qualify it to have shortcut. Also works very well against random MS/IE related sites.

Eliminating the Firefox installer does not mean that Firefox suddenly goes away. It's still right there in the Muon Software Center for those who rely on that to find software; those who know it by name can obtain it via the Muon Package Manager or apt-get at the command line. Should Kubuntu place an installer icon for every popular application? How should "popularity" be measured?

It's important to realize that while user input is always welcome, and that decisions are largely informed by a participatory community, a particular Linux distribution reflects the desires and goals of the distribution's maintainer. These may change over time, and most often become noticable in package selection. But no one who chooses to install Kubuntu is bound by the maintainer's decisions; users are free to make as many post-installation modifications as they wish.
