    Problem With Startup/Shutdown/Reboot

    After about a day of using 12.10 without a hitch, I began to have problems with startup only occasionally. This suprises me as I expected a problem to show continuously or not at all. When I start or reboot, I get the Grub screen as normal, but the plymouth screen cuts off after a couple of seconds and goes to a text screen and asks me for login and password, then goes to a command line cursor. At that point, if I type in "startx", then it moves on to the normal splash screen and then to the desktop as normal. As this doesn't occur every time I am concerned it will get worse. It's only a minor hastle right now, but with the trouble I had getting a clean 64 bit copy, I don't want to have to try a reinstallation. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    I hate replying to my own thread, but as I've heard no reply, I'll post where I'm at with this issue in case there is someone else having similar problems. I believe I've narrowed the problem down to video driver issues. First my system is a Dell Inspiron dual core 2.0 ghz (AMD athlon 64X2 AMD 3800+)with 4 gigs memory and dual HDDs set up with triple boot; Windows XP, Linux Mint 12.0, and Kubuntu 12.10. When first setting up my new Kubuntu instalation, I inadvertantly installed the newest, version of Nvidia driver: 304.43. I could not find instructions for changing this so I ran this in my CLI, reinstalling the same 'nvidia-current':

    " sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current &&sudo apt-get install nvidia-current"

    So far it appears to be working, but it worked for a day or two before giving me problems earlier when I first installed.

    thanks,

      I would say it is a video driver issue, i had exactly the same problem with the current driver in 12.10 on my Satellite L750. And as you say, it is only a minor hassle but i unistalled it all the same and the problem went away. I just wait for the final release of 12.10 and then try it again.

        I'm certain of it. Unfortunately, I had everything working properly for 24 hours then the last update changed my Nvidia driver from 304.43 to 304.57 and now my plymouth has reverted to the plain jane grey default and I can't seem to get the solar flares back.
