    Muon updater

I updated my installation with the latest batch of updates over the weekend but after rebooting there was a warning stating that the kde-plasma profile was no longer available. I tried logging in using the default profile but kde would not start. After trying the failsafe with no luck I switched back to the console and ran

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
which installed quite a few missing packages. I had only run this command last week so I'm quite surprised that various critical packages had been removed. Does anyone know why this would happen? I've usually been updating using the command line.

The packages that seemed to have vanished are:
    qdbus
    kde-workspace-bin
    acpi-support
    x11-session-utils
    cpp
    kde-workspace
    x11-server-utils
    xorg
    cpp-4.7

I had something very similar happen to me when updating yesterday. Do you have the KDE backports ppa in sources?

I do but they are pointing to the quantal distribution which doesn't yet exist leading to errors whenever I run a refresh. I normally ignore them but now I've removed the ppas entirely.

        Hi,
I'm sorry that you are having problems, but I can relate, I completely lost an install using Muon, so I just use a terminal now.

But why does Muon sometimes botch upgrades? It shouldnt do that. Apt-get doesnt.

Good thing I never touched that Muon. Seems it's not much better than KPackageKit.
Synaptic always works fine for me - it never screwed anything up. It didn't have any problems upgrading my system to Quantal either.

Muon always installs what it says it's going to install. There's never been a report of it doing otherwise. All "botched installs" have been people not reviewing changes closely. Muon is just as sound as Synaptic, and you can screw up in the same ways with Synaptic if you are not careful.

Hi Jonathan, since you're on the thread I'd like to ask why Muon by default have the "upgrade" GUI button of apt-get dist-upgrade rather then the "Safe Upgrade" GUI button of apt-get upgrade ? Wouldn't it be less confusing for those who're not reviewing changes closely? (and eventually less to handle for people solving those packets removed issues).

Or change name of the to "Full Upgrade" for dist-upgrade and to simply "Upgrade" for upgrade

(Maybe this should have been posted in the Muon thread)

Then I'd just have people complaining that Muon didn't upgrade all their stuff. It's not exactly something unexpected either, as even Synaptic's default upgrade behavior is to dist-upgrade.

Fair enough, thanks for the answer.
