    Bravo, Bravo, Bravo Quantal Quetzal.

    Just Bravo.

    a) The live DVD was able to actually hook up to my password protected NetGear wireless router.
    b) The login screen is VERY professional, looks as if I can apply an image and provides, out of the box the ability to add another user. VERY well done.
    c) Kontact works, although I have not actually did a "test" of recurring dates yet because I wanted to bask in the glory of the calendar working.
    i) I went to Akonadai and there were all three of the requisite tools for hooking to Google IMAP, Google Calendar and Google contacts.
ii) the Akonadai hookup to Google mail IMAP was straightforward, as it has always been.
iii) Both Google calendar and Google contacts NOW sport a brand new interactive page in which one goes directly to Google and signs in for the two items and there is a very nice splash around the screen that describes how it is Akonadai that is doing the work and you are merely entering your user name and password.

Akonadai has finally arrived! (for as long as Google wants it to arrive! lol ), Yes, it does, indeed, seem that Akonadai is finally doing what people said it would.

KUDOS to whoever accomplished this, the Akonadai devs, the KDE devs, the Kubuntu devs, I do not know, but bravo!.

I think this release really could go onto a tablet and work!

Kontact is correctly displaying recurring items and Kontact works both ways from Gcal to Kontact and from Kontact to Gcal.

HOWEVER, if one inadvertently does not enter the password correctly at the Kontact end it will store the password and seem to be working but is not. It does connect in Akonadai, it seems, but not in the Kontact app so one has to delete the Kontact password in Kwallet.

So.....Kontact seems to be completely functional as of this post.

Quantal file management, android, bluettooth, tether

Quantal file management, tethering, bluetooth, android.

Quantal, for this author, recognizes a bluetooth and a tethering hookup for an Android telephone(Samsung Galaxy S).

In either case the following holds.

Kubuntu does nothing until the phone pops a message that it is linked, in some way, to the computer, as a "mass storage device"(a warning is popped on the phone that some other things may not work correctly if linkage is engaged).

Upon "engaging" the phone Kubuntu does not SAY anything; but when one goes to Dolphin(file manager) the phone is displayed as a SAMSUNG telephone.

When one clicks the phone in Dolphin one sees the whole file structure of the phone.

When moving files, say from DCIM, on the phone to the computer, as a "copy", an informative balloon is popped that notifies one that such is occuring and it displays the approximate time to carry out the operation.

The balloon is popped both in the task bar and on, for this author, the top right of the screen, the top right display showing a "bar line" which shows the progression of the transfer.

To disengage the phone one can click the phone in Dolphin and "safely remove".

Again, it would seem that Quirky Quiddich is doing everything that everyone has asked.

        SomBITCH!!! printer configuration...GREAT!!!

Please see my post immediately prior to this about file management.

The first word that came out of my mouth upon "adding a printer was".....'SomBITCH!!!' "

And that is because the OS did not "present the USB printer" which ALL DISTROS DO.....that is the ummmm

        EASY WAY OUT!!!!

It presented FIRST AND FOREMOST.....my antiquated HP Laserjet 6P printer that just chugs those pages out over and over and over in black and white but that is what PEOPLE REALLY NEED.......

Now, the first driver offered was the "recommended one" and I tried it.....

        BE FOREWARNED.....

I test with the letter "a" that is a small case letter "a" without the quotes.

It chugged out...............TWENTY ONE SHEETS OF PAPER even with cancelling the job....

        BUT IT RECOGNIZED THE PRINTER!!!!!!

And THAT.....is the REALLY important thing!!!

BIG NOTE ---- I then chose the driver which I knew worked and one page and it printed. END OF BIG NOTE

ANOTHER BIG NOTE --- it does not really matter what printer you are trying, you may have to try several of them and WASTE SOME PAPER, but when you get the correct drive write it on a sticky note and put it ON the computer tower!! lol END OF ANOTHER BIG NOTE.

Ok so then I did the usb HP Multifuntion printer.

It saw it, offered a driver as a multifuntion printer and it produced one sheet with the letter "a" thereupon....

        I can only say.....again.....

SomBITCH!!! Quantal recognized BOTH a parallel and a usb printer!!!

AGAIN....KUDOs to "whoever" on the development team!!!

Scanlite, New Person to Linux, hits keep comin'!

Ok, I spent some time in NYC with my boy, the astronomer, and we went to a "wine/food pairing" restaurant.

I took a bunch of pictures of the meal and goings on with my Android and scarfed a menu and business card from the place.

So, of the many, many fine places in which to dine in our fair city I have a normal watering hole, which does pairings to a fare thee well and wanted to give them the images, menu scan, etc. for a comparison.

The fellow who is the chef/owner had a very high end place in Chi Town and came here to:

          a) get away from the violence and "other conditions"
          b) make more money! lol

Anyhow, I thought I would just follow whatever menu items that QQ offered as if I was a new person to Linux.

I put the menu and card on the HPmultifunction.

I went to the office section of the menu and did not find a scanner app.

I want to graphics and found "Skanlite", with which I was not previously familiar.

But, the title was immediately recognizeable as a scanning app.

I clicked it and the app appeared and I clicked scan, and the app then searched for, and found, the HP and started the scan.

          TWO CLICKS! woah!

Skanlite presented a .png to save and I did so.

I closed and clicked the saved image and Gwenview took over and opened the image and I printed.

          Seamless.

For even the most new person to Linux.

          Again, bravo.

Activity notifier defaults an app for first file

            Woah!
The little notifier that pops down at the bottom right that says what is going on in the file system.

I noticed in Precise, with upgrades, I think that there was an open button, or maybe not.....anyway,

There is now an "open" button that appears and I ventured to click it and....

It did not open the file structure, which I expected.........

It popped Stage and opened the first file! WOAH!!! :O

            EDIT: same for transferring images.

Now that is just tres kewl.

Whist in New Yawk City I made a couple of videos on the Android.

I offloaded them with a tether and tried to play one, DragonPlayer opened for it, but complained that it needed the correct codecs. It promptly downloade and installed them automagically and then proceeded to play the video.

I'm thinking that next up the computer will pop the cd tray open when I approach with a cuppa joe! lol

Well, after I badmouthed Kmail / Akonadai because it seemed to receive mail but not send it through Google, but would through my college e-mail, ( both IMAP ) it turns out that the problem was Google's doof double password thingy.

So, Kmail is now fully functional, as far as I can tell, and I apologize heartily for my badmouthing of the app.

Kontact calendar is now deleting recurring appointments that have passed.

Specifically, I had to manually delete older appointments just a few weeks ago, so, I guess an update took care of that.

Telepathy is working, with the possible niggle of the Yahoo account not allowing me to replace the avatar with a picture, but that may be a Yahoo thing, as per another person here at the forum.

Otherwise Telepathy (KDE Instant Messenger) is working.

Amarok does it all, playing cds etc. without having to move the tracks to the computer.

I tried upgrading 12.04 to 12.10 using claydoh's very nice guide, but I messed it up, so I downloaded the image and installed it over the root keeping home. This gave me the chance to try out the btrfs file system for the root partition. 12.10 is working very nicely, not like I might expect a beta to be. I'm very happy. Thanks to everyone involved in developing this next release of Kubuntu.

OT: notabug, didn't you have the crawling bug for an avatar? I see that Teunis has it (now?).

I've been tempted to borrow that crawling bug to use elsewhere, but no, I've never used it. It's pretty cool though. I've never been able to make up my mind for an avatar to use at KFN.

I love that bug, so I think it will be borrowed one more time. lol

So far, I've had hundreds of app upgrades and a kernel patch since the initial install of 12.10 b1 and so far, so good. (fingers crossed) My /home is still ext4 as I didn't feel there was a need to change that. After several years of 'testing' Linux distros, I'm still very much a noob, so I try to add only one experiment at a time. That's usually enough to get me in trouble.
