See Launchpad bug 1002736. The Xorg-synaptics (with a "c" ) driver had deprecated several unused functions, and the latest one finally eliminated them. The Synaptiks (with a "k" ) touchpad utility expects to see these functions, and crashes when it can't.
I had been able to delay the error by pinning the old Xorg-synaptics driver until just a few days ago. The X Server stack now in Quantal has a dependency that's incompatible with the old Xorg-synaptics driver.

Ah, that probably explains why Synaptics complains that it can't find the touchpad on my new Acer V3-771G.
Doesn't matter to me anyway, I don't use the touch pad. I'm a mouse man.
Anyway, the touchpad works as it should but, thankfully, the Fn+F7 key combo disables it as it my script doing the same had run."A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”
