You may also create your own PPA on launchpad and provide packages and maintain bugs without joining the team officially. It depends on you whether you wish to join Kubuntu development team or not. But as a user I am happy that you keep maintaning this program and offer your help.

Well I'm not sure about creating PPAs - probably more hassle than I can be bothererd with to be honest. However, I'm more than happy to keep kcm_ufw acitively maintained - I keep QtCurve upt to date, even though I stopped using that well over a year ago!

But, for kcm_ufw to ramin bug free I need users to email me bug reports, not just post them on a forum/kde-apps where I'm likely to miss an reports.

OneLine posted a link to the IRC log of the most recent Kubuntu Council meeting. The decision was made to return LibreOffice to the standard Kubuntu build because of its greater degree of interoperability.

bad decision imho ... calligra is improving and needs to be used widely in order to match libreoffice features and stability. (the same was made for telepathy vs. pidgin in ubuntu)
I don't see the need to include libreoffice and firefox (link) in Kubuntu. Gtk apps can be easily installed if anyone needs them.

They do still have several Calligra apps in the build: Calligra spreadsheet, Calligra words, Calligra flow, and Calligra stage (presentation). So you do get a choice.

I think the best apps available should be offered regardless if they are GTK or QT based. I am not a purest though. Argue about LO if you want (although I prefer it), but firefox has no real equal (just my opinion).

These are the kinds of decisions that distribution maintainers must continually make. Kubuntu strives to be as close to upstream KDE as possible, but will make occasional deviations. The decision to remove most of Calligra, and add parts of Libre Office, is one example. Fortunately, each of us is only a few apt-get installs away from as much customization as we'd like.

Just playing the devil's advocate here, one might ask why if we are just a couple clicks away from installing the software we want is there even an office suite included? There is a realization that you can not please everyone, and perhaps even that you can not please a majority, so it seems the question becomes what can be done that annoys the fewest.

I suppose you have a point, but for those who like to build their OS from the ground up there are alternatives such as Slackware or Arch Linux. Had there been no included apps in the first installation of Kubuntu I saw, I would likely have moved on to something else and not found the true value to be had in a "pure" KDE experience. It's nice to install an OS and then immediately to begin productive work with it without having to spend a day or two finding and installing the apps you need to make it work for you.

When we say "just a couple clicks away", we're actually saying "just a couple clicks and an internet connection away". The thought is that the ISO should provide a complete experience from the get-go, even if the user lacks access to the internet after the install. Otherwise there's really not much point to an ISO installer.
