    can't make XSPF open in VLC - opens in firefox first

    I have VLC installed and have some XSPF files that contain radio stations for VLC to stream. When I click on the XSPF the desktop goes to Firefox first and then opens in VLC.

    I have used the method to open by using choose open with/ choose other / choose VLC / tic the box to remember file association for this file type. You get a pop-up saying that updating system config and the file opens in VLC. It won't remember the association and next time I click on a XSPF file it opens in firefox and then VLC.

    I've gone to system settings / file associations and removed Firefox from the hierarchy of programs that will open XSPF files. It still opens in Firefox first.

    I know that in windows that once you choose to always use a certain application to open it a file, that is what it does. Not sure why kubuntu isn't doing the same thing?

    When you edit the preferred applications the file association changes should be added to the ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list.

    It is a text file. Are markings correct ? What if you rename (remove) the mimeapps.list and try again to change the application preference order ?

      Here is the list. I'm not familiar with editing the file but it looks like VLC is associated with xspf files. If I delete the mimeapps file, by default, will it be populated again.

      I do see some duplicate associations such as the xml files.

      application/xslt+xml=kde4-rekonq.desktop;firefox.desktop;kde4-kate.desktop;
      application/xspf+xml=vlc.desktop;

      Code:
      [Added Associations]
      application/x-desktop=kde4-kate.desktop;
      application/x-extension-htm=firefox.desktop;
      application/x-extension-html=firefox.desktop;
      application/x-extension-shtml=firefox.desktop;
      application/x-extension-xht=firefox.desktop;
      application/x-extension-xhtml=firefox.desktop;
      application/x-mozilla-bookmarks=firefox.desktop;kde4-rekonq.desktop;kde4-kate.desktop;
      application/xhtml+xml=firefox.desktop;
      application/xslt+xml=kde4-rekonq.desktop;firefox.desktop;kde4-kate.desktop;
      application/xspf=vlc.desktop;
      application/xspf+xml=vlc.desktop;
      audio/xspf=vlc.desktop;
      text/html=vlc.desktop;firefox.desktop;kde4-rekonq.desktop;kde4-kate.desktop;
      x-scheme-handler/chrome=firefox.desktop;
      x-scheme-handler/ftp=firefox.desktop;
      x-scheme-handler/http=firefox.desktop;
      x-scheme-handler/https=firefox.desktop;

      [Default Applications]
      application/x-extension-htm=firefox.desktop
      application/x-extension-html=firefox.desktop
      application/x-extension-shtml=firefox.desktop
      application/x-extension-xht=firefox.desktop
      application/x-extension-xhtml=firefox.desktop
      application/xhtml+xml=firefox.desktop
      text/html=firefox.desktop
      x-scheme-handler/chrome=firefox.desktop
      x-scheme-handler/ftp=firefox.desktop
      x-scheme-handler/http=firefox.desktop
      x-scheme-handler/https=firefox.desktop

      [Removed Associations]
      application/x-desktop=vlc.desktop;
      application/x-mozilla-bookmarks=vlc.desktop;
      application/xslt+xml=vlc.desktop;
      application/xspf+xml=kde4-rekonq.desktop;firefox.desktop;kde4-kate.desktop;
      Delete the entire mime file and when I go to the xspf file and ask to open with I see Firefox and rekong. I think that somewhere the xspf is registered as an html file.

      The icon sitting next to the xspf file should be the little orange VLC cone but instead of the cone it is a little blue looking world.

        At here...

        (This is with the Precise - with the Trusty the VLC is starting always alone.)

        The default xspf start application is the VLC:

        If I right click a xspf file the list is right:

        But if I left click the xspf file the Rekonq and the VLC will start.

        The KDE have the default application settings at KDE System Setting > Default Applications. Under the Web Browser the setting should be in 'Open http and https URLs in an application based on the contents of the URL'. Only then the VLC will start alone.

          That was the answer and I wouldn't have looked for it in that place. My file registration is correct but changing that web browser default worked.
          I wonder if the change will effect the hyper links in my thunderbird e-mails. At least VLC files are starting correctly.

          Thank you very much.
