So I would use Google to learn how to do that? Do you have a suggestion as to which one is easy to switch to?

Switch to different Ubuntu apt server to get updates from.

In Muon, go to Settings - Configure Software Sources. On the very first tab there, you will see where to change this. You can pick Main Server, or chosing Other, you can select from many servers in many countries, even have it ping them and help find the fastest (though speed does not always mean reliable or quickly updated). There are a number of them in Australia, that normally are used as the pool for the whole country.

Thanks Claydoh, I was originally in that section removing the older repositories then got locked out. Let me explain.

As before, I tried to open muon and each time, even from the terminal, it would open and an error message would pop-up then after "ok" the whole programme would shut down.
So I rebooted his system and selected recovery in grub. selected networking from the recovery menu then root, at the CL typed

Code:

startx

.

The root gui opened and I opened muon, where I was able to get into the Settings - Configure Software Sources and selected the Main download server and updated from there. I rebooted. . Any way it is resolved, though not without some fun.

The same issue has returned. I'm about to go around and see if I can help him some more. He Emailed me his new error message.

Encountered a section with no Package: header

EDIT:
OK so with his update issue I rebooted and noticed how many old kernel & image files were in grub, like mine had, and decided to try cleaning it up before trying to update (after reading and utilising the link suggested by Steve Riley HERE on my system earlier today) but the error outputs were similar to the update error outputs, even in root CLI.

The errors say that some files in /var/lib/apt/lists are broken for both update and kernel image removal.

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_restricted _binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Was the error from Muon updater.

For Kernel removal.

Ok after posting the error as a google search a solution was found HERE

Ok, please try these commands one-by-one:

sudo apt-get clean
cd /var/lib/apt
sudo mv lists lists.bad
sudo mkdir -p lists/partial
sudo apt-get clean
cd
sudo apt-get update

We would get to the PPA errors later, once we figure out the more important ones.

So It seemed to work so far.
I was able to update with muon and remove kernels.
