    Dolphin: Changing Icons

    The problem is when I select a folder to display something else other than just a folder icon.

    Right clicking on a folder brings up;
    Click image for larger version

    Left clicking on 'Properties' brings up;

    Then when I left click on the blue folder icon it shows;

    I then left click on 'Browse' to navigate to a folder with the collection of alternative's I want to use instead of the standard icons, they are all '.png' pictures.

    What my problem actually is, is after I have changed all the folder icons I want to, when I reboot, the icons are back to the blue folder.

    KDE icons

    Background

    The KDE icon (non-standard) information is saved to the .directory (1) file:

    (1) KDE .directory file:

    The .directory file is a KDE folder view properties file. It contains the folder viewing settings for a directory in the KDE. It includes settings such as icon and view mode (icon, list, etc.). Automatically created when the view settings of a folder are modified. Hidden by default.

    What to check

    Check your .directory files.

    If the 'Icon=...' information is correct try to purge the icon cache: ~/.kde/cache-<HostName>/icon-cache.kcache

      I've wondered what that .directory file was for.
      So far so good. Deleted the file and now changing all the icons, the acid test is a reboot.

        My .directory folders are all the same, even the ones I have changed the icons in.
        [Desktop Entry]
        Icon=folder-blue

        And some of the icons are still the default blue folder!

          I've found an easier and quicker way to change the folder, I've copied one of the .directory files and coped it to sub-folders of the main folder.

            I think this might be a permissions issue. /media/Drive3/Downloads is a link. You might not have permission to write directly to the .desktop file within that folder.

                How can I change that?
                Also, some of the folders that I have changed are accepting the new picture and some have reverted back to the blue folder even though the info in .directory is telling it to use a different icon.

                  @here

                  If I want to change the /bin directory icon with normal user rights - there is no option to do that.

                  If I try to do it with the root rights - it is possible.

                  BUT as default the ordinary user doesn't have right to read the root's files. The ordinary user's Dolphin is using the default directory icon.

                  The root can give permission to read (/write/execute) the file.

                  Then the ordinary user can see the new /bin directory icon.

                    If you have a look at the permissions box in my first post, you will see that it is editable, so I do have permission, also, that is not the folder in question, the ones I want to change are ;
                    /media/pooky2483/EXT-02/TV_Series_01/
                    and they all are editable by me... But some (90%of them) will not change to what I want them to be, also, I just tried to change them as ROOT user and nothing happened!!!

                        It seems to let me change the icon to a system icon OK but when I try to change it to a user icon, it does not let me.

                          Maybe Dolphin doesn't have permission to read the target files?

                          Try copying one to the system folders and see if it works.

                            Could you tell what kind of system do you have ?

                            There is a bug report - Bug 288824 - New view engine doesn't show custom folder icons anymore: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=288824

                            It's status is fixed BUT there are comments that there are problems.

                            Here the Dolphin (Kubuntu 12.04 - 13.10 & KDE 4.8 - 4.11) is showing custom icons. Tried with the Ext & Ntfs.
