Ensure that you have the packages kubuntu-restricted-extras and kubuntu-restricted-addons installed.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Probably not the answer you are looking for but this is how I "get a link to play mp3 files from the internet."

        I listen to/stream music from somafm.com (30+ stations)
To obtain a playlist file (.pls) I decide on the genre and go to that particular station eg. somafm.com/play/groovesalad.
When the site loads a popup appears:

        You have chosen to open:

        groovesalad.pls

which is: PLS file (676 bytes)
        from: http://somafm.com

What should Firefox do with this file?

        Open with ...

        Save File

I save the file to music folder or desktop for future use and open it with compatable player eg. VLC or Amarok

With the restricted extras, and such, Amarok now, seemingly plays EVERYTHING audio.

Apparently, from another thread, Clementine is now back and working and it also played everything.

If they don't then it is probably the restricted extras.

More info about your system would be helpful.
