    Problem with lightdm

I have been a user of 64bit Kubuntu 12.04.2 LTS on HP pavilion DV6. I an stuck up with a peculiar problem. Some days back I had a login problem wherein lightdm manager was not loading properly. Therefore I was not getting the login window and the login process used to get stuck up at the black screen showing lightdm manager fail.

Reading somewhere that reinstalling lightdm manager will solve the problem, i installed lightdm. But I mistakenly installed lightdm instead of the kde version of it. And along with that, many other ubuntu package were also installed. Now when I started the PC i was getting the unity login screen instead of kubuntu. If I login, it will not proceed from there.

Then I uninstalled it and installed lightdm kde. Now I an getting some kde login screen but even then after login, it does not proceed. I want to mention here that previously I had installed cairo dock and had configured a start-up using cairo dock Open GL. Now it showed that Cairo dock display cannot start. I uninstalled Cairo dock and themes associated and still it wants to login using Cairo dock. Also at the login screen, there is no option of login using fail safe mode. Logging in using terminal and then typing startx shows that display manager is already running. I can not proceed and am totally lost. Please advise.

if I am not mistaken ,,,,,and do not think I am ,,,,,12.04 still used KDM as its display manager , so I must ask how did you get lightdm in the first place ?

    you can try ,,,,,,,

    1) reinstall kdm , or just make shure it is still installed and then run
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
2)make shure you have lightdm , lightdm-kde-greeter installed and run
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
as one or the other gets reconfigured you will be asked if this is the display manager you wish to use .

Thank you Winnie right. I tried to reconfigure kdm. I got the response that kdm is broken or not fully installed. I tried the reinstall and it worked very well. Now the GUI is available through kdm.

Many thanks indeed for your advise. It helped a lot in solving the problem. This is one more time I am convinced that due to open source nature of Ubuntu and great community helpers like you, we can solve the toughest of the problems and restore the system.
