KDE 4.11 window border bugs on Kubuntu 12.04

I have scoured the internet but found nobody else listing this problem yet:

I just upgrade my Kubuntu 12.04 install to KDE 4.11. After rebooting and logging in, I see that all window borders are missing. It makes no difference if I go into settings and change the theme or window appearance.

There's another bug too: I always have the task bar set on the "Windows can cover" option. But that does not work. Instead, it acts like the "auto-hide" option where it's hidden until mouse is on bottom of screen.

Has anyone else seen these problems (especially window borders) after this install?? The previous version of KDE worked just fine for me.

Im running 13.04 and I have a similar bug to your task bar bug. My windows are going behind the panel on the bottom regardless of the settings. When I try to change the settings, a new panel is made automatically

My window boarders work fine though.

Sounds like the task bar viewing behavior got messed up somehow.

I deleted my .kde directory (after backing up), and rebooted. The window borders still did not show up. So I restored my old .kde dir.

      Anyone else with this?

        Theres a bug report going.

Do you happen to have a dual monitor setup? The guy who filed the initial bug report has dual screens and so do I. I also noticed that kscreen was held back from the update...Im wondering if this has to something to do with it. Probably not, but you never know...

I don't have dual monitors, but I bet it's all related. Sounds like his taskbar is behaving wrong too.

            Got it WORKING!

The window borders now appear, buttons work correctly, and I don't have the taskbar problem anymore; i.e. the "windows can cover" mode works correctly.

I rebooted into recovery mode, enabled networking, and chose the 'fix broken packages' option. There were three packages it said were broken including one related to the kde window manager (I forgot exact name). It fixed those ones... I also allowed it to go ahead and nuke some 'obsolete packages' it found (they looked pretty innocuous... mostly java stuff, though I still don't know if it's safe to always remove obsolete packages).

When I rebooted, the window borders appear and the taskbar works right. It still says KDE 4.11, as I wanted to make sure...

Maybe this will help you? You can probably just do it through synaptic without going into recovery mode.

Hmmm....no broken packages here. Looks like Ill have to wait for a solution...not really a big deal.

Glad you got your figured out though.

There is no kscreen in the Kubuntu backports repository: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=kscreen

                It's in universe:
                Code:
                steve@t520:~$ [B]apt-cache policy kscreen[/B]
                kscreen:

                What output do you have?

I ran into a very similar problems on a *single* VGA monitor install yesterday. Empty desktop to start off with, when I added a default panel windows maximised behind it despite it being set to "Always Visible".

Solved it all when I went into "Display and Monitors" (or kscreen) and discovered the system thought I had *two* monitors running - VGA-0 and DVI-0.

I turned DVI-0 off and my problems were solved and my missing panel returned as well.

I had the same problem today after upgrading my laptop to 4.11. Kwin was removed during the process of ugrading to 4.11 !

                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get install kde-window-manager
                        and reboot solved the problem.

Edit: On my brother's pc with amd card and catalyst drivers, window decorations are broken with disabled oxygen window decoration animations. On my laptop with opensource ati drivers, everything works well.

I added the kde window manager like you said and it looked like it was still at 4.10.5 and hadn't been up graded.

I tried installing kde-window manager and after a reboot kde wouldn't load. It would hang after I typed in my password. After a quick re-install instead of sudo apt-get upgrade I did sudo apt-get dist-upgrade instead and that seemed to get everything installed with no issues. I chalk it up to "user is stupid."
