I compiled and installed new realtek sound driver now timeout in Grub doesn't work

I've been having problems with sound since I installed a new motherboard. One of the suggestions to solve the problem was to install the latest realtek sound driver. Configure, make, make install, all seemed to run ok. But now the timeout for loading the default OS in Grub has disappeared. I use Grub Customizer to edit Grub. The timeout is set there. When I save it changes nothing still no timeout when I boot. I've looked at the etc/default/grub file and the timeout entry seems to conform to positings on the web about how it should look.

    New kernel fixed it.
