Can't install gtk programs

Hello everyone! I tried to install Google Chrome on kubuntu (other gtk apps like Imagewriter and Unetbootin), and Qapt appeared, I clicked on install, and it said that it was succesful, but I couldn't find none of the programs I installed (which is gtk). I tried both 12.04 and 12.10.
Unetbootin and imagewriter was from Software Center, and Google Chrome from their official website, obviously

You used the search box in the Kmenu and nothing comes up for "google"?

What about google-chrome in a terminal?

Qapt gave me a Google Chrome menu entry in Kmenu > Applications > Internet.

The thing is that I couldn't even install it. It took so little time (or even no time) for Qapt to install. (I mean I clicked on install, than it said at the moment, that it has been installed.)

I don't know how to debug Qapt problems. It might be working for me because I have a newer version via the experimental PPA:

This is very kind of you, but there must be something different option to solve it, because it is a very basic thing for a linux distribution.

I downloaded Chrome from Google's web site. I right-clicked the .deb file and (in Dolphin) chose Open With -> QApt Package Installer. QApt chugged for a bit, checking dependencies, then raised this dialog:



I know that if I click Install Package, QApt will first download and install the two dependencies, and then install the package. But since I don't want Chrome, I canceled.

You might instead consider installing chromium-browser, the open source version of Chrome that's maintained in the Ubuntu repositories.

I am curious about your problem, though. Perhaps we can take a look at Unetbootin first. What's the output of:

sudo updatedb && locate unetbootin

I've tried to reinstall kubuntu. Unetbootin started, but I installed imagewriter as well (both from Muon), and after imagewriter unetbootin can't start, but imagewriter can...Interesting
I couldn't install Chrome from the official website :S, but never mind

Well, it's installed. What happens if you simply enter

unetbootin

in a console window?

Launching it from konsole did not work.
Actually, when I start a gnome app, and if it asks for permission, it should be in a normal KDE window. But it isn't. It reamins the same Gnome pop-up windows (a grey window, and the background gets dark). Then I enter my paasword, and a program called gksu will be placed on my taskbar. I can't open it, after a few seconds it disappears. If I try to lauch it from the menu, Unetbootin will be on my taskbar, but I can't do with it anything, just disappears after a while. (Same with gksu.)
Anyway, I managed to install Google Chrome (from the official website). If I downloaded with it, I could install it. I tried downloading and installing with other browsers (Chrome, Firefox), but it didn't work somehow...

We've had a couple other posts recently where the presence of gksu was causing problems. Removing that, and thus falling back to kdesudo, resolved the problems. Perhaps you can do the same. But let's check something first. Please show the output of:

apt-get --simulate purge gksu

This will show the output of what would happen if we really did remove the program. But nothing actually gets changed. This will tell us if you have some other program that depends on gksu.

You can probably do without usb-imagewriter, as Linux distros are not usually made available in .img format. So let's uninstall both programs:

sudo apt-get purge usb-imagewriter gksu

Now, after you do that, can you run unetbootin from the console window?
