Best path to an un-supported HPLIP upgrade?

I've never tried this, so I thought I'd query the experts.

I'm in need of a package version not available to my Precise install. I can't find any plans on the internet for a backport so I'm left with several options:

    1. Stay with the current package and give up on the additional functionality.
    2. Install the Quantal package
    3. Install the Raring package
    4. Remove the Ubuntu package all-together and install from the source.

The packages in question are hplip and it's associations. The available versions are:
    3.12.2 - Precise
    3.12.6 - Quantal
    3.13.3 - Raring
3.13.3 - HP project run file

I checked the depends and all are the same and met. I'm leaning toward option #4 because I'm a bit concerned that a future Ubuntu update might break the depends with my older system. I suppose I could install the official packages from Q or R and lock the versions.

Any opinions on the best course?

The target system is a server running 12.04 LTS so I'd like to stay with the LTS as long as possible. The added functionality is duplex scanning - a "nice to have" but not a deal breaker.

EDIT: Duplex scanning came in at hplip version 3.12.4, so .6 or above should satisfy my needs.

and my hp-toolbox dose not even give me an option to scan ,,, I half to do it from the printers web interface or use acquireimages or skanlite and all of them give just basic setup choices ,,,,,,what exactly is duplex scanning ??

I'm on to 12.04 (where I was sure the tool box had a scan option ) and see whats up their ............then I will install the 3.13.3 from hear with checkinstall so it's easier to remove http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...os/ubuntu.html

ok so I found that xsane is needed for the hplip-toolbox to have a scan option ,,,,,,,,and that my printer dose not support duplex printing ,so prob not scanning also.

so I wont be trying the newest hplip from that link as it will gain me nothing/not much ....... sory but I tryed but I will be adding xsane to 12.10 as it has so many more options than the rest , at least hear in 12.04 :-P
