How silly!

I was in failsafe mode, and of course the desktop effects were disabled by default

Now everything seems back to normal, I really have to thank you for the great help you gave me. These forums are a real resource!

Sometimes it's the little things that get us . Glad to be of assistance...although you did most of the detective work yourself, and that's the best way to learn about the system.
