    Customizing some defaults

    I have installed Kubuntu-12.04.1-64bit-LTS.

    During initial customizing I have changed some default applications:
    1) Dolphin -> Konqueror (which I had to install additionally)
    2) rekonq -> Firefox
    3) KMail -> Thunderbird
    Besides I have installed Synaptic to use as a package manager.

    Q: May I now purge painlessly Dolphin, rekonq, KMail, Kontact, KAddressBook, and Muon (or some of them) with their particular dependencies taking in account their deep integration in the system and bearing in mind possible future upgrade of one?

    No you can't. Just leave them. They won't bother you. Just remove them from the menu.

        Yes. A simulated purge of these packages:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get purge --simulate dolphin rekonq kmail kontact kaddressbook muon
        Reports:

              Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
              so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

            Thank you very much for your all-inclusive response.
            Just to clear up: does the code you provided mean that the packages update-manager-kde, muon-updater and muon-notifier will continue their work by themselves or will not (and then may be purged too)?

              They will be remove/purged. You said you were wanting/going to install the Synaptic Package Manager, which has it's own notifier, so you will be fine.

                  Unfortunately purging or removing dolphin affects badly on functionality of konqueror though there are no apparent dependences between them. Namely konqueror loses 3 items in Menu->View->Mode view (upper item of the submenu; as I use localized version of the system the names of interface items may be only descriptive): Icons, Table, Compact; Terminal emulator and FSView are left. Of course this is unacceptable for use of konqueror as a file manager. I heard the opinion on one forum this is because of this piece of functionality of konqueror is realized via dolphin. :-(

                    Well, (re)install dolphin (if you did remove/purge it). You don't have to use Dolphin, and can even delete it from the K Menu if you want.

                    Everything is a compromise. We almost never get to have exactly what we want.
