Losing size & Position

Since the last 2 updates, KDE has been having a real problem "remembering" window size and position.

I have set both repeatedly in the "special application settings" window and on the next boot, KDE insists on reverting to some size and position that is totally unrelated to the size and position that it "supposedly" memorized.

KDE remembers the desktop even though I never specified that should be remembered.

Is this a known bug in 12.04 since the last couple of updates

If it is application window size and position that KDE is failing to remember, it is indeed a problem with KDE, and it goes back before 12.04. To the best of my knowledge, there is still no fix for it. It drives me crazy with Libre Office. My other apps are affected less by this.

I have another thread on this on the forum somewhere, but I can't find it.

You can try system settings | WorkSpace Appearance and Behavior | Window Behavior | Window Behavior| Advanced Tab. Try changing the "Placement" setting to something other than "smart". You may still not get what you want, but the results may be more consistent.

On my 12.04, I have no problem with open application windows geometry being remembered. The sole exception is Quassel, which exhibits 'position creep' unless I set the geometry I want and activate 'Force'. All other applications window settings behave correctly.

I have this issue with Libre Office not remembering its window size, which I thought was an LO problem. I am told that it is not, but rather an issue with the KDE window manager.

How do you 'force' Quassel to stay put? Perhaps I can try that with LO.

Right-click on the window Menu Title bar and select More Actions > Special Window Settings... and click on the Size & Postion tab. Check the Position and Size boxes then select Force in the drop-down menu. Set the geometry for each. Click on Ok.

Sorry, I'm lost already. The title bar of Libre Office? The KMenu? What is this Menu Bar you are referring to?

OK, I tried right clicking that in Libre Office. I get a menu, but I need to click "Advanced" to get to where you pointed me. I'm there now, and I'll try playing with it.

Last time I checked, yes. What is more, it appears that there is no desire to fix it either. I do not say that to be critical. I just remember reading some information on that. It would take me a while to find it again, though.

Have you tried Snowhog's suggestions above? I'm working on something else at the moment. I'll try his suggestions later.

Well, given that for me it works (except as noted with Quassel), I have to say it isn't a KDE 'bug'. So let me ask: Are you seeing this behavior with KDE applications or with non-KDE apps?

Only with Libre Office on a regular basis, and sometimes with Firefox and Thunderbird. However, here is the thread that I thought was here. The other references to the KDE bug are listed in message #5 of that thread.

As I note in that thread, the link refers to an earlier version of KDE. However, I am still finding an issue with this.

I'm not looking to lay blame. I'm just trying to respond to a question, and find an answer that works, or is at least a workaround. I'll be trying your suggestion next.

Yes.

However, it "ain't a big deal". It is just an annoyance, the same as the Akonadi quirk I have found is an annoyance. It doesn't stop KDE from being a great desktop. One just needs to learn to work around it.

So, as I expected, Gtk (Gnome) applications. While one does desire nice integration of Gnome apps in Kubuntu, it often isn't the case.
