sadly no ,,,,,, not without knowing exactly what updates/upgrades were not completing/going through when this all started going south in the first place.

Interesting. I remember having issues with proprietary ATI/AMD GPU drivers a year or two ago and manifested exactly as OP described. Oh well, at least its fixed.
