Help, need to know what "updates available" actually means!

Running Kubuntu 12.04. Question, when Notification states there is "updates available".

Is it talking about updates for the programs I have installed?

Or, does it mean that these updates are the latest programs for Kubuntu 12.04 system,

but not necessarily for the ones I have installed and using?

It means it will update all packages your have installed via the package manager (or that came installed with the system) will be updated to the latest version in the ubuntu repos for 12.04.

Its like windows update, but also updates programs that you installed via the package manager rather then just system files.
