Hi Merry Xmas but not for LTS Precise

Who does the KDE software updates for LTS, Precise
for it is misbehaving just before Xmas, is it Ubuntu or Kubuntu
Nothing would shut down and on the menu bar everything has moved left I could not shutdown except forcibly,
Nothing like an LTS that is supposed to be stable, its sure not reliable any more.
Maybe another install and no updates here in Oz, they are becoming a liability.
So Xmas is coming and the silly season starts.
Hope it can be fixed but not holding my breath.

Sounds like your panel has resized itself for no good reason, did you try right clicking to access the panel menu it to fix it? I always set my system up to "shutdown if power button is pressed" for such an occasion, or shortcut Task Manager with Ctrl+Alt+Delete, you can shutdown from there. Do you have a dual monitor situation, or nVidia's twinview?

I've have had no issues here (kubuntu 12.04.1 w/ KDE 4.9.4 and kernel 3.2.0-35).

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year regardless!

Absolutely no where near enough 'information' to go on to answer the question.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

          Hi Snowhog,
FYI it is on an intel dual core with an asus board and 4 g ddr3, and I think the latest updates in 12.04 32 bit have killed it .
It freezes, skype microphone wont work any more, and a lot of data will be lost.
I fixed the menubar by deleting it and reinstall;ing the default one but this was the least of the problems.
I did a check on the hdd and it is OK.
So the install is cactus now I think.
There seems no way to get runlevel3 and kill kdm and desktop to run fsck as a last gasp.
          So syonara for now

In the very extreme case (which, I'm not convinced you are or are not there), you simply rescue your data (using any Live CD & standard methods), then check partitioning (using GParted Live CD), then reinstall Kubuntu.

Wow, I have never seen an update make that much of a mess, as for Qqmike's suggestion, I suggest downloading the latest 12.04.x installer/live incarnation and run the DVD/CD contents check first, maybe even run in it on your original install media.

Edit: I am guessing because you have DDR3, you have an i3, 5 or 7, which would mean it is a very 64-bit capable processor, why are you running 32-bit Kubuntu? Is your BIOS scaled BACK for 32-bit?

Edit 2: I used to use Asus, I hate them now because I had several buggy boards, their USB ports, etc, eventually fail, leaving the user scratching their heads. It might be time to start diagnosing your hardware, are you overclocking? Is your ram set to higher than your i(insert CPU model number here) is able to natively handle? Some boards allow for faster RAM speeds than the Intel processor spec. Run a memory diagnostic, among others, like a SMART HDD check, this all sounds too wierd, I have never had ANY Linux distro go that nuts on me.

Did you try Alt-SysRq R S E I U B? That would be a far better way to shut down, if it works, than the pushing the power button.

And then if you can boot a Live CD or USB stick, and back up your data, that would be the next thing to do.

I'm also wondering about your hardware, particularly the video/GPU, as that would explain the funny screen shifts. For example, does it only happen when your system is fully warmed up, or does this happen right away after you reboot?

You are blaming Kubuntu 12.04, but have you booted another Live CD and tested your system? Are you sure the problem is not in the underlying hardware?

Hi I rescued the system with system rescue CD,
but now to my horror find ALSA installed which has killed skype it worked fine with pulse audio.
Has ALSA now been installed in 12.04 kde 32 bit.
I sure hope not, it does not handle skype well and, further skype recommends pulse audio in linux for skype
Here is hoping it was system rescue.

I will often reject an installation of something that will dramatically change my system or drag tons of unwanted extra packages with it, I thoroughly check the list (in Synaptic) before the final 'OK'. As for Skype, of course MS is not going to be in a hurry to adopt Pulse, they could care less, they are not in the business of supporting anything Linux (are you sure there is no setting in options to choose the audio handler?), I am hoping a FOSS alternative to Skype takes off in popularity, I uninstalled Skype the day MS bought it.

As for Skype, for me, in 12.04, it "just worked." I suppose this is a function of one's hardware. There are many threads on Skype here.
                      Mine is this one:

                      (SOLVED) Skype setup?
                      http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthr...ght=Microphone

(Btw, when I posted that question, I didn't know that my Skype was actually OK--read the thread and you'll see how I played with some settings. And, btw, I only know what I posted in that thread, AND I have forgotten all of it! I am certainly no sound expert--what I know is posted there.)

                      Wishing you luck.

OK, here's 32-bit Kubuntu 12.04 -- skype test works here too, as far as sound output, with pulseaudio -- I just don't happen to have a mic on it:

                              Hi-Merry-Xmas-but-not-for-LTS-Precise

Oh well tek_heretik I Hope you mean Kubuntu 12.041 has stayed with pulseaudio,
sounds like I abandon this install as it still has some problems, and reinstall and hope alsa does not turn up.
If it does turn up I will abandon ship, for despite MS there is as yet no real substitute, and heaven knows if there will be.
Merry Xmas and a happy new year.
