However, this shortcut is completely futile. Absolutely nothing happens, and the only way to exit nano, for instance, is to kill it/close the terminal. I'd really appreciate some advice, as this is seriously debilitating when working with emacs/nano.

I suspect it's an issue with input (to state the obvious), but beyond that I need some guidance. Please ask questions if you need to know more so that I can help you help me.
- exit nano after opening/editing a file
- cut text in a text editor
- various other stuff in emacs
