ctrl + x is non functional in many applications

So I'm trying to use the keyboard shortcut ctrl+x to do things like
    • exit nano after opening/editing a file
    • cut text in a text editor
    • various other stuff in emacs

However, this shortcut is completely futile. Absolutely nothing happens, and the only way to exit nano, for instance, is to kill it/close the terminal. I'd really appreciate some advice, as this is seriously debilitating when working with emacs/nano.

    Thanks in advance.

P.S. My apologies if I haven't provided enough details, but I don't have much else to say other than symptoms described here. I suspect it's an issue with input (to state the obvious), but beyond that I need some guidance. Please ask questions if you need to know more so that I can help you help me.

Sounds suspiciously like a hardware fault, do you have another OS installed? If so dose it work for that? Do you have a spare keyboard you could try?

Other then that I can only suggest you try creating a new user and see if it works for them, if so then it is a config problem with your current user.

      I tested both your hypotheses:

Worked fine on Windows 8, so that rules out hardware fault.

Tried this, and it did work on a different user. You were right, and I looked into my config and fixed the issue.

      Thanks!
