Amarok Plays, But Kaffeine Doesn't in Kubuntu 12.04

The subject says it all, I think. I prefer Kaffeine for audio CD playback, and I've had it working in other distro installs.

How a are you trying to use the Kaffeine ?

Is there difference between:

- from the device notifier ?


- from the Kaffeine



Have you tried with the commandline ?

Thanks for the suggestions. I get all the same video you do, just no sound. Kaffeine "thinks" it's playing the CD; it displays the song titles.

I tried the command line and got this:

kaffeine --audiocd

And then the Kaffeine window came up and did its thing... silently.

I've noticed that I've also lost sound in Firefox, I guess it's flash.

But I do have sound in Amarok and Dragon Player.

I'm wondering if I installed some funky libraries or something while I was installing players while trying to remember Kaffeine's name from a previous distro install. I know a number of the players dragged in a flock of dependencies.

Is there a way to restore the original sound setup, short of reinstalling Kubuntu?

The Kaffeine is a bit different. It is using the Xine.

At here the Xine packages installed:

If you have those and the sound is not playing. The Kaffeine has the xine-config configuration file: ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config .

You could try to:

1) Rename the ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config when the Kaffeine is not running. When the Kaffeine is started there should be a new ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config with the default settings.

2) If the default settings are not working you could edit the ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config.
There is a audio driver setting:

# { auto pulseaudio alsa oss jack none file }, default: 0
#audio.driver:auto
...

Uncomment the "audio.driver:auto" and try the pulseaudio/alsa /oss settings.

I have all the xine libraries installed. Test #1 had no effect. Test #2 was interesting. I uncommented the lines to give:

There was still no sound, and even more strange, after I exited Kaffeine and reloaded xine-config, the lines were all commented out again!

If you install the xine-ui (1*) you could use it's config files with the Kaffeine.

1) Start the xine gui: K > Multimedia > Xine
2) Right clik the Xine UI > Settings...



Set the "Configuration experience level" high enough

3) Change the settings and exit the Xine (UI)



4) Copy the ~/.xine/config to the ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config

Something to check

If you play the CD with the Xine-UI - Do you hear the sound ?



You could try to search the correct settings with the xine-ui and copy the settings to the Kaffeine.

(for those who are using the Quantal or later)

The xine-ui /1/ with the Precise is using the Xine1. The xine-ui /2/ with the Quantal is using the Xine2. The Kaffeine /3/ is using the Xine1.

The Kaffeine&Precise could use the xine-ui configuration files. The Kaffeine&Quantal may or may not use the xine-ui configuration files.

I did that, but still no sound. And the file was changed back to a commented out line ""audio.driver:auto".

I tried just putting "pulseaudio" in place of "auto." Still no sound, but this time the file was not changed back. It looks like the program does not like having more than one driver included.

I installed xine-ui and tried to set it up as you described. I left the "audio driver to use" set to auto. I "played" the CD with xine; the waveform display showed the track as playing, but there was no sound. If I change the driver to pulseaudio, it wants to know "device used for pulseaudio" and I don't know what that should be.

Just for the heck of it run "alsamixer" in a terminal and see if perhaps the PCM chanel is turned down , or one of the others.

Oops! I only made sure the Master was at 100%! Now that the PCM is also at 100%, Kaffeine works fine.

I guess your question was the audio equivalent to, "Check to see if your computer is plugged in."

lol ............. I have been caught by that quirk before.
I believe some packages or updates to some do this as when it happened to me the PCM Chanel WAS up then some how got mysteriously muted or turned down ? go figure
