Kwallet: the bane of my existence

kwalletmanager is installed. It asks me for my password every two minutes when I use rekonq. I want to stop this so I type "kwalletmanager" in the terminal.

So I purge kwallentmanager. And it still asks me for my password constantly even though its not installed, not storing anything, not anywhere near my computer.

I want this off my computer for ever. How can I accomplish this without taking a sludge hammer to it (which I am close to doing...)

One thing nobody tells you is you don't have to use a password. You can leave it blank. Then, whenever it pops up - click "Always Allow" and it doesn't come again.

I wish that were ture. Ive clicked "Always Allow" a thousand times and it still comes up. Whats even more stupid is that I dont even need to enter my kwallet password to get the password. For example, when I check my mail, the kwallet thing comes up, I click cancel, it enters my password anyways and then pops up again two minutes later.

Agreed. Kwallet is a great concept and its OK when it works but something always goes awry and then it becomes so painful. Allow always also doesn't work with me. My gmail imap account with kontact pops up every 5 min and drives me crazy although it continues to work. Are you running 4.8.5 or 4.9.2?

Cancel will result in it coming back. Ok with Always Allow will allow it to close and not come back - at least in normal (not broken) operation.

Have you forced a re-install and then re-configured it without a password?

You don't have to reinstall kwallet. You can disable the system in System Settings, add/remove a wallet, even edit settings or remove individual application or login credentials. Look in System Settings - Account Details --KDE Wallet. Look at the Access Control to edit/remove a particular program from the list - if you remove one, it will re-prompt you if you want it to use kwallet. Then you can go into the Wallet Manager and remove individual items, but that is a bit awkward as the "maps" of passwords are not separated by application usually.

The easiest thing to do up front is to go to Access Control, delete the entry for Rekonq, and go from there.
If you want to change the password on the wallet, open the Wallet Manager, right click on the wallet (usually named 'kwallet' by default) and select that option.

So even when you have removed the password from the wallet itself, you're still receiving password prompts? That's weird. Sounds like a bug.

Whenever I perform a fresh installation of Kubuntu, one of the first things I do is turn off KWallet. It is just a totally useless function.

I've removed/purged everything I can find to do with KWallet - it's gone from the K > System menu, and from System Settings > Account Details etc.

Everytime I fire up my 13.04 32bit system, 'KDE Wallet Service' pops up saying an application(s) is requesting access to the KDE Wallet?

Where else do I have to look to get rid of this damn thing.

Background: I used KMail and the Akonadi resources to sync with GMail/Calendar. Because KWallet is sooo unreliable, I moved to Thunderbird and its integration with GMail. In fact, I have now stripped out a bunch of KApps in favour of other solutions. I know do NOT want anything to do with KWallet - but it's still lurking somewhere...

Help?!

Many KDE applications are designed to use the Wallet to store passwords. Rather than try to force the system into an unexpected state, go ahead and allow the Wallet to do what it wants to do. Configure it without a password. Then you won't see the prompts anymore.

I 'choose' not use KDE Wallet, and do not enable it. I don't have any issues with passwords, but maybe I'm just lucky.

Hm. I wonder where KDE apps store passwords if you aren't using a Wallet.

Apps that require a password, I type in when requested, except for KMail (my SMTP account), and there I 'choose' to store it as plain-text within the configuration. The one and only exception to this is Quassel. The IRC servers require authentication, and the passwords are stored within the application, but I believe that Quassel encrypts the passwords. Yes, not the ideal method, but I'm comfortable doing it this way.

Makes sense that the the non-Wallet behavior would be application-dependent. TBH, on desktop machines, I don't worry a whole lot about cleartext password storage either.
