Dolphin won't go into compact display mode

On one of my machines I can't get Dolphin to use the compact display mode. I've tried Adjust View Properties and also the wrench icon, but no matter what I do I still get a display showing icons and laid out horizontally. What I want is a list-style display. How can I get it?

Strange, I just press Ctrl + 2 for compact or Ctrl + 3 for details.
I am using KDE 4.9 from Backports if that makes a difference.
    Using Kubuntu 17.10 64Bit

      Yep. Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2, Ctrl+3. KDE 4.9.0 here also.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

The problem is with the display of the files

I've tried Ctl-1, Ctl-2, and Ctl-3. They cause the indicator at the top to switch among the modes, but the display itself still shows the icons in every case. If I do Ctl-3 (details), the details are actually listed under each icon!! (This is with Dophin version 2.0.)
