As for the Geek Squad, they are employees like any employees--and people--everywhere. I've gotten some of the worst advice from them ... and I've gotten some the best, most invaluable advice, tips, and guidance from them. Like for any personal information source (including, for example, your doctors and auto mechanic), you've got to "assess" ("size-up") their credibility/rapport/capability.

As for 12.04, although I've resisted installing it until recently (steadfastly holding onto 8.04.3 which I still have running on another machine ...), I see nothing wrong with 12.04; and I see many things very right with it. Whatever problems one might have upon installing it, I would think should be solvable.

Stoskraft's last reply was on the Aug 24 and since then many have contributed to ways in which hardware problems can be found and also others have reported how pleased they are with 12.04.

Since we are now up to page 4 on this topic with no recent news from Stosskraft, is it worth continuing to provide input on this topic?

To the extent our follow-on posts have possibly helped the OP, we can't know until s/he provides an update.

The full discussion contains some valuable nuggets, and might be useful for others who find this in a search.

Hello all, I have been away for a while so I haven't check the forum lately. I have got the printing working now and a newly filled cup of patience regarding my system. I must admit I thought LTS meant stability and long term support. Granted I am having more problems with 12.4 than the previous version than ran fine, I am asking more of the system. I have cut the desktop effects back to help boost performance and it is noticeable.

I wasn't expecting my rant to get some many even tempered answers

I do have one small question. I am a teacher in Vietnam and I am running my own classes. Can someone suggest a program for me to track enrollment and invoicing? maybe able to set up waiting list for separate classes and such?
I looked at https://sites.google.com/site/enrollix/home on getdeb but wanted feed back from people using this forum.

          Thank you again

            LTS = Long Term Support
What this means is that your version of Kubuntu will continue to receive bug and security fixes for 5 years. LTS's are generally more stable than a "normal" version. If you decide to keep 12.04 for the full 5 years you will find that none of your programs will be upgraded to the latest versions unless you do it yourself via the ppa system. It is because of this that an LTS is generally more stable.

I cannot recommend a program for your enrolment and invoicing needs, but can't you create the system using Libre Office Base and/or Calc?

              Kubuntu 12.04 on HP dv4.

I haven't had any problems with 12.04 since upgrading from 11.10. ALL programs and applications, be them KDE or 3rd-parties, work just perfectly. My compliments to all devs.

Rekonq works great here. I suppose each person's set of metrics will be different

"behind" is subjective. Just because rekonq is less-featured than other browsers doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Since most problems are generally caused when upgrading to newer (major) versions of software and LTS releases will only upgrade bug fixes LTS releases tend to become more stable over time and remain stable once you have ironed out any initial bugs you have found. But they are generally not much more stable they any other release in the first few months of their release as they haven't had time to mature as much.

So the main advantage that makes LTS more stable is that they have allot longer to mature then normal releases.

The best way to keep a stable system if you are upgrading to LTS only is to upgrade when the .1 version of the LTS is released (ie 12.04.1 which was released about a day ago).

it works but it renders web pages succesfully less than stable firefox and opera

LTS means longer support (and more chance that someone will make ppa for newer packages)
i am fine with 10.04 LTS on server (ubuntu desktop width vnc remote).
kubuntu is on my two desktops (workstations)
i was hoping to upgrade to kubuntu on my server too, but i found that headless vnc server doesn't work without monitor (stupid ah ?
so i left older LTS on this machine.

                            1. ssh into monitor-less server
                            2. install vnc4server on the server
                            3. enter "vnc4server :1"
                            4. enter "export DISPLAY=:1"
                            5. enter "x-session-manager &"
                            6. exit terminal session

You should now be able to vnc into the server with "vncviewer server_name :1"

                            Here'a a good howto:

Let me put it another way: ALL programs THAT I USE. I've never used Rekonq nor Konqueror; KMail works just fine - give it a try.
