    Xorg takes alot of RAM

    Hi

My system is ON 24h/24h. Almost a year ago it's being folding with Boinc.
But sometimes it get's alot slow. I see the processes and Xorg is using 1GB or more of RAM.
My systems is a 64bits and I have 8GB of RAM.
If I restart the Xorg, all is well again.
    Is this normal??

    Thanks

Most likely a memory leak. Finding these can be very difficult.

I am guessing you are running the nvidia prop. driver?

edit: you might try turning off all desktop effects and see if that makes a difference.

I'm using the recommended driver that appears on the Aditional Drivers menu..
        Should I use another one?

You could remove it and see what happens. I had a problem with xorg consuming memory and had to restart x every 2 or 3 days. I can't remember when it went away. Seems like it was either the switch to ATI or turning off desktop effects. Good luck.

            I sometimes see this.

            How are you restarting Xorg?
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

log out. alt+e at login screen. It has been a while so maybe I was rebooting instead of x restart...I can't remember.

Odd. I can't log out - it just hangs after a bit - can't even Ctrl-Alt-F1. So I'll stick with restarting (which does work fine).

I like my desktop effects and the nvidia proprietary driver (without which I occasionally have a power management issue), so I'll grit my teeth and live with restarting when X starts consuming too much memory.
