I dont see where any one said they downgraded. I am guessing it is possible but might be more trouble then it is worth. As for the PPA(s), this just disables apt from grabbing files from the PPA in the future. Removing the ppa does not remove packages from your system.

            Downgrading the PPA packages

            Package: ppa-purge
Description: disables a PPA and reverts to official packages
This program disables a PPA from your Software Sources and reverts your
system back to the official Ubuntu packages. You can use this to return your
system to normal after testing a new version from a PPA.
            Homepage: https://launchpad.net/ppa-purge
The PPA purge is in the official repositories.

            ppa-purge -help
            Usage: sudo ppa-purge [options] <ppapaowner>[/ppaname]

ppa-purge will reset all packages from a PPA to the standard
            versions released for your distribution.

            Options:
-p [ppaname] PPA name to be disabled (default: ppa)
-s [host] Repository server (default: ppa.launchpad.net)
-d [distribution] Override the default distribution choice.
            -y Pass -y --force-yes to apt-get or -y to aptitude
-i Reverse preference of apt-get upon aptitude.
            -h Display this help text

            Example usage commands:
            sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers
            will remove https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

            sudo ppa-purge -p xorg-testing sarvatt
            will remove https://launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/xorg-testing

            sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
            will remove https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

Notice: If ppa-purge fails for some reason and you wish to try again,
(For example: you left synaptic open while attempting to run it) simply
uncomment the PPA from your sources, run apt-get update and try again.

            Note !
The older KDE version may or may not understand newer version setting files - you may need to reset them.
That is: When the KDE is not running, rename the KDE directory: ~/.kde/ .

The KDE SC 4.8.5 is going through the same process: Kubuntu-ninjas PPA --(closed testing)--> Kubuntu updates PPA --(open testing)--> Ubuntu proposed --(open testing)--> Ubuntu updates

claydoh Cool, people are curious about what may be available in the standard repos 17:43
claydoh over the 5 year life cycle 17:43
shadeslayer if you're talking about -updates, then -updates will only have 4.8.x 17:44
            ...
ScottK Before we consider 4.9 for the official backports repository, I'd like to know who volunteers to do 5 years of security support for it (which is three years after is' no longer supported in 12.10). 17:45
ScottK If you want 4.9 after 12.10 is released, I think you should use 12.10. 17:46
ScottK That's been the way we've done it in the past. 17:46
            shadeslayer ouch 17:46
debfx I highly doubt we can push 4.9 to the official backports repository 17:46
debfx far too many rdepends of the various libs 17:47

ppa-purge removes ppa and uninstalls all packages from that ppa
              Very useful tool.

Removing only ppa sources doesn't do anything with packages. You need to uninstall 4.9 packages and make sure older packages are installed.

I downgraded because I had problems. Perhaps it was caused just by theme, I don't know. Before update from ppa it makes sense to set default oxygen theme. Of course this is not any rule but a few times I had this problem with Bespin. Just to let you know what you may pay attention to.
Anyway I want to add that I needed to install kubuntu-desktop package because it was uninstalled during update from backports. So if you use ppa-purge and have problem don't panic, check if you have this package installed.

The same that triggered upgrade - kubuntu backports. But if you removed the entry from sources list it is obvious that it has nothing to refer to. But you still have packages 4.9 from backports. I would first add backports entry and than use ppa-purge:
                  Code:
                  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
                  sudo apt-get update
                  sudo apt-get upgrade
                  sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
                  sudo apt-get update
                  sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
Perhaps first update (and upgrade) are not necessary here but I would do that anyway to make sure everything is ok and that there are no any broken things.

                    nice idea but:
                    korisnik@ubuntu:~/Dokumenti$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
                    Updating packages lists
PPA to be removed: kubuntu-ppa backports
Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: kubuntu-ppa backports

i even tried to add 2nd ppa from:
                    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.8.4

Perhaps you have some invalid entries in /etc/apt/sources.list.d.
Remove them. Check in Muon what packages you have. Do you have kubuntu-desktop installed? What version?
                      Try the procedure again.

You will have to add the ppa entry back, as you said you removed it. The ppa-purge tool needs that so it can determine what to downgrade. Adding a different ppa won't help with this.

                          i will repeat i had 2 ppa (1st to get 4.8.x, and 2nd backport to get 4.9)
                          yeah i tried all combination.
i will leave it with ppa on and wait if it breaks kubuntu.
so far beside problem of kernel (logitech usb kbd and mouse on boot not responsive) and one crash of amorak db no problems.
i got problem installing on nvidia gt240 but i use force (alternate cd

forgot i lost muon on upgrading to 4.9 (but i installed again)
