    Kjots does not work

Kjots does not work under Kontact: nothing happens when click File->New book... and so on. This simple program always worked well until 12.04 and I could hardly imagine how it could be broken. The latest package update:
    kjots:amd64 4:4.8.4a-0ubuntu0.3

It doesn't work when run by itself, either. Apparently you have to highlight either Notes or Local Notes, and create the book under one or the other of those. That can't be right.

Check if the Akonadi server is running. It won't work without that. I couldn't do a thing with Kjots either until I started the Akonadi server. I don't use Kontact so Akonadi wasn't running. But if you're using Kontact I would have thought Akonadi should be working too.

OK, an update. Please disregard what I said above regarding Akonadi. My memory isn't what it used to be!

I reinstalled Kjots and tried again with the Akonadi server running and Kjots wouldn't do anything. It's just dead in the water, completely unresponsive as far as creating books or pages is concerned.

I had a look on the KDE bugs site and found that we're certainly not alone:
        https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=303095
        https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298755
        https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298955

I gave up on Kjots very quickly when I first had a look at it because of this problem and ended up installing Gnotes which I used very successfully in Ubuntu 10.04. Gnotes works pretty well in Kubuntu and doesn't bring in that mono stuff (unlike Tomboy).

OK, I may have fixed the problem.

Looking at KDE bug report 298755 comment #4 by Mike H gave me a clue. I had a look in the Akonadi Resources configuration tab, click on "Local Notes", click "Modify..." and I noticed that the path was wrong--

          It was: "/home/rod/.local/share//notes/ULR7X46V0Z/"

Simply deleting the extraneous "/" after "share" worked wonders! Kjots now is working just fine :-)

Ooops!! I spoke too soon, should have tested it a bit more. While I can now create new Books and pages, when I edit a page I keep getting a notification that some folder doesn't exist :-(

There is a similar "tree like" note taking application Cherrytree, although it is a Gnome app.
            http://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/

Do you have spell-check working in Kjots? I found this bug report and it has status fixed. But I can't see any spell-check option. Any help?

And there is certainly no option to change language.
If you miss this feature comment on bug or vote:

            And by the way:
KJots - add active links feature

            Kjots - minimize to tray

Sorry for this little off-topic but if you like this app you might want to vote for developing it.

I tired the suggested fixes, with no success.

Another application you might want to look at is basket, but unfortunately there is no akonadi/kontact integration.

              Edit:

              1. Apparently what is shown in the left column of kjots is the akonadi resource being used. So any new books would be created under that resource. Highlight one of them, right click, and see if you can create a new book under the resource name. That works here.

              2. If you want to use basket or some other application, you MIGHT be able to get integration to work by pointing the akonadi resource to wherever the application stores its data. Haven't tried it, but it could possibly work. Just an idea.

Try Basket notes. It's a KDE application and you can install it from the Ubuntu repository. No reliance on Akonadi.

                  Thanks for all replies.
In spite of mark "You are subscribed to this thread" on my start message I have not had any email notification and returned to this thread manually today.
Although in any case one can find a possibility to enter a little note in his/her computer, your replies confirmed me in opinion that common development trend more and more looks like regress than progress :-(

I'm very sad. I've been trying to use KJots for a few years now. Each time I give it a try, it seems to work fine. Then, later (perhaps after an upgrade or code update), my books end up looking empty. KJots has so much promise. It feels like the code just isn't tested well enough before release. I currently have books with information in them (I can see it in plain text XML) but the books end up empty in Kontact and KJots. I may have to try Basket notes as well. I'd much prefer to use KJots.

I gave up on Kjots some time ago. I believe the problems are related to nepomuk and are fixed in the later versions of KDE. But as I am sticking with KDE 4.8.5 in Kubuntu 12.04.3 the problems with Kjots persist.

I have tried several different notes apps as replacements for Kjots and I finally settled on CherryTree which suits me. There is an older version of it in the repository but I decided to update it from the developers page here: http://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/. Download the Debian/Ubuntu package and install with QApt package installer.

There are many import options one of which might make it easier to import your existing data into CherryTree (there is no specific Kjots importer unfortunately). I had my original data in Gnotes which imported without problem into CherryTree.
