    Skype 4.0 for Linux NOW AVAILABLE and WORKS

    After a very long wait for the Linux community, version 4.0 is available Download from Here. I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit version. To install it, I used the Muon Package manager to remove Skype version 2.2 and then just clicked on the downloaded deb file and it was installed successfully. I have also been able to make successful calls with it.

    The UI interface is essentially the same but the call window is quite different as shown in the graphic below. To get full screen image, there is now an icon on the lower right of the Skype window. There is also a technical information screen that can get in the way. It displays such things as packet loss, sample rates and CPU usage and is shown in the attached graphic. This information can be removed by deselecting the box in Options>Advanced "Display technical call info"

    I hope you also have success with this new version. I am a firm believer that successful comunication requires high quality audio and video. We live in a world that is dominated by Microsoft and communication with all my contacts requires Skype. I am therefore glad that this new version has finally arrived.

    See my post at the end with information on upgrading from 4.0.0.7 to 4.0.0.8

    Yea, about time. I got this as well but you HAVE to remove the old skype otherwise you get a dependancy error

      @ NoWorries. Your link only seems to show Skype version 2.2. Where do we get version 4.0?

        When I clicked on the link I get Version 4.0 as shown in the graphic which is a section of the web page brought up with the link. I hope you are able to get the same on your system.

          @ NoWorries. Thanks for that, but still getting 2.2. Perhaps being in the UK is the problem? Will try next week -- going away now for 3 days

            Removing Skype didn't remove skype-bin:i386. When I removed it via Muon then Skype 4.0 installed OK.

            EDIT:
            Post install report: On my box 4.0.0.7-1 runs better than Skype 2.2. It picked up my 2.2 contacts and settings automatically and displayed my contact list when I ran it the first time. The test call ran perfectly. The video and mic work great.

              I did a Google from the UK site and found an alternative source for you at: UK Option. Before installing the new Skype 4.0 make sure you use Muon Package Manager or Synaptic to remove Skype 2.2.

              I hope this works for you. Enjoy your break of 3 days.

                I'm in the UK, and that link still leads me to a download page for v2.2

                Some more googling led me to this, though:

                First, you must

                Code:
                sudo apt-get remove skype skype-bin
                Then, for 32bit systems do this
                Code:
                wget -O skype http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-ubuntu_4.0.0.7-1_i386.deb
                sudo apt-get install libxss1
                sudo dpkg -i skype && sudo apt-get -f install && sudo rm skype
                And for 64bit systems do this instead
                Code:
                wget -O skype http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-ubuntu_4.0.0.7-1_amd64.deb
                sudo apt-get install libxss1 lib32stdc++6 lib32asound2 ia32-libs libc6-i386 lib32gcc1
                sudo apt-get -f install
                sudo dpkg -i skype && sudo rm skype
                sigpic

                  Hi Guys! Thanks for all the suggestions. Tried them all, but total failure here. Tried the various download sites. Tried purging old versions, removing .skype, removing skype.bin etc. But I cannot get the new version to work. Cannot even get the Test Call function to connect. Even worse, when I try to revert to Version 2.2 that will not work either. It's a puzzle?
                  I'm running a 64bit 12.04 Kubuntu with the latest linux 3.2.0-25-generic kernel; Intel Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7744 @ 2.8GHz; KDE SC Version 4.8.4.
                  Any suggestions welcome! In the meantime I'm going to remove all evidence of Skype from my box.

                    Sorry to hear that you are still having trouble getting Skype 4.0 working. I hope that I am not being to simplistic, but I would be very interested to make sure you have the appropriate sources. I have attached images of the settings for my system and I would be interested to know if yours is similar.

                      @ NoWorries.

                      Thanks again. I checked out the sources. Basically similar to yours. Re-purged and re-loaded. No luck -- the system just hangs/locks/slows down. BUT I had my system set up with ALSA sound and it appears that you need pulseaudio "stuff" onboard to run Skype 4.0. I did not like pulseaudio and have always removed it before but the Ubuntu site https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SkypeTroubleshooting gives help with this aspect.
                      Having installed pavucontrol and the virtual package "esound" I found that Skype 4 now works.
                      Happy days!!

                        I removed Pulseaudio several months ago in favor of alsa sound. When I installed Skype 4.0 the only thing I had to do was make sure the "Digital" and "Capture" sliders were above 90%.

                        Here's what is on my system:
                        :~$ locate pulse
                        /etc/pulse
                        /etc/pulse/client.conf

                          Following on from HalationEffect's post (post # 8 ), I get the following errors when trying to do the command:

                          Code:
                          sudo apt-get install libxss1 lib32stdc++6 lib32asound2 ia32-libs libc6-i386 lib32gcc1
                          Code:
                          ~$ sudo apt-get install libxss1 lib32stdc++6 lib32asound2 ia32-libs libc6-i386 lib32gcc1

                          I have only just done a completely clean install of 12.04, and have updated, and installed a few packages (thunderbird etc). As far as I know, that is it... so I can't understand why I'm hitting such problems... I did install version 2.2 of Skype first - and then found out that there was a newerr version not in the repositories... so I uninnstalled and tried to install v4 from the Skype website (using the 64 bit version for Ubuntu 10.10).

                          I have a 64 bit installation - and would really like to use Skype 4.0. Any ideas why this might not be working for me?

                          Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

                          Bag.

                            And as an addition, trying to reinstall v2.2 does not work. Muon PAckage manager tells me that no skype packages are installed. When I try to reinstall it, I get a lot of errors shown that complain of paakages required that are not installable...

                            See the picture attached for more info.

                            Thanks,

                              Upated Version of Skype 4.0

                              For those of you who are interested in updates to Skype a recently reported problem with IM/Chat has been fixed. The systems impacted by the problem are listed here. The new version is 4.0.0.8-1 and can be downloaded from Linux Skype.

                              I do not use IM/Chat but am always suspious that they may have fixed other problems in doing this update. Hope you have success with installing this new version. Because it is not in the repositories, I removed the previous version before installing the new one.

                              Enjoy
