I see that the announcement says "You can get it from the Kubuntu Updates PPA until the packages are available in the official repositories." How long will it take for them to moved to the standard repos?

Learning from history
(Previous page of the "KDE SC 4.8.4 Status"): "The KDE 4.8.3 testing and transition from the Kubuntu updates PPA to the Ubuntu updates did take about a month..."
The path to the Ubuntu updates is usually:
Kubuntu-ninjas PPA --(closed testing)--> Kubuntu Staging PPA --> Kubuntu updates PPA --(open testing)--> Ubuntu proposed --(open testing)--> Ubuntu updates
SRU
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates
Once an Ubuntu release has been completed and published, updates for it are only released under certain circumstances, and must follow a special procedure called a "stable release update" or SRU...

So far I have not found a great deal of difference because I do not used it a lot as it is on my wife's computer and she has not complained. The only thing that I did notice was that there was a popping sound which increased in volume as the speaker volume was increased. This is quite useful.
Edit . . . Another change is with the file rename (F2) in Dolphin. This is now done in situ with a blue box around the filename. One change that I consider retrograde is the display of NFS mounts and removable devices in the Places panel of Dolphin. The bar under the device is no longer present to show the device is mounted. There is now a small icon on the left of the device name with a small arrow when the device is mounted.

I happened to grab the 4.8.80 update during the few hours it was briefly in the Kubuntu Backports PPA. It hasn't caused any major problems, but it's obviously been replaced already with 4.8.90 in the beta backports PPA. Sounds like it's working well for you guys, I should probably add the repository and upgrade.
