problems with Canon iP4000 since upgrade to 12.04

Since upgrading to Kubuntu 12.04, I have been having weird behaviour when trying to print to my Canon iP4000. I also have an older Epson Stylus Color 860 and am NOT experiencing the same problems with it. The symptoms are that sometimes after printing a job page the printer will go into "waiting for data" mode, and sometimes it starts in that mode and I am unable to send jobs at all. The only way to (sometimes) get it out of that mode is to unplug the printer and plug it in again. I've noticed in Printer configuration that the URI, which was, if memory serves, "/dev/usb/lp0", is now "usb://Canon/iP4000?serial=A33773", which makes me suspect the problem is with the new CUPS or Gutenprint package and/or the way the printer URI is set up. Any fix suggestions?
