If you try this, be sure to use this command...
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install lightdm lightdm-kde-greeter
...otherwise you might end up with the Unity or Gtk+ greeter and many related dependencies.

Will this be a permanent install? I have a new install now and don't want to mess it up....

If the system is working the way you want it to, then I wouldn't make the change. But, since you've installed and reinstalled several things, before doing anything, why not update what the current install status is for the computer and also whether it is working right or not.

It is a new install but still has the nvidia screen flashing black and the color bars pop up so I have to reboot. It happens randomly during usage but is fine right after booting. So I would say it's not working completely. However, I don't have an upside down screen anymore. I added a new user and the problem still exists. It does appear that after following your driver update it's not happening as frequently.

If you install LightDM, it will take over as your primary display manager. To return to the default KDM, run:
            Code:
            sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
TBH, I'm not sure changing display managers will have any effect with respect to upside down/backwards window contents.
