edit - back to dying every 5-10 minutes this morning.

Should I increase the modprobe.conf values? How much should I increase them by?
    options mac80211 max_nullfunc_tries=60 max_probe_tries=60 probe_wait_ms=3600000
The "probe_wait_ms" is set for one hour, which is insanely high (default is 500ms) but you know it won't disconnect on waiting, so I would increase "max_probe_tries" to something like 120. If that doesn't help then restore it to 60 and increase "max_nullfunc" to 120. If that doesn't help then make them both 120. If that doesn't work then I'd double them again.

If that doesn't work then I'd downgrade the wifi driver to that in the previous version.

Let's talk about downgrading drivers. I've tried changing max_nullfunc_tries and max_probe_tries to no avail.

The wireless drivers are kernel modules. You can downgrade your kernel.
Currently, in my 12.04 install, I show:
        /lib/modules/3.2.0-23-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00lib.ko/lib/modules/3.2.0-23-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00pci.ko
        /lib/modules/3.2.0-23-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2x00usb.ko
Here is an example of how to do it:

All of the ppa kernels are here:
        http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
Pick the one you were using before and download the image and header files for your architecture (i386 or amd64).

Plan C, what device are you guys using for wireless? What definitely works with 12.04?

Sure I had wireless working in 11.10, but not SATA 3, and the old video drivers weren't good either.

Amazon has some PCI wirless cards, with prices ranging from $5 to $75. Make sure you have bg or bgn.

I ran a cable through the attic and haven't had a problem since. So, problem either solved or abandoned.

Funny you should say that, personally, I don't like wifi, my phone comes with bandwidth that I barely use anyway and I don't have a laptop so...wired is fine by me.
