I don't even know how to configure a custom sound, so no, I haven't tried it. How do you change it?

EDIT: Nevermind... I just discovered this is a Thunderbird setting. Here I was digging through the KDE settings! I'll try a custom sound and see what happens.

In Thunderbird go to EDIT --> Preferences --> General. There you'll see When New Message Arrives and how you can configure. Custom sound is applied there.

I tried it with the attached wave file and it works. Hmm... maybe Thunderbird is just picky about what kind of audio files it will play.

Must be. I converted the WAV file to a OGA and renamed it to match /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/message.oga. It did not play. As soon as I put the original back it worked. Must be something with that but what? I've used it for years!

Yep! Your WAV file played perfectly. What the #$@!#$! Makes no sense. Let me see what Audacity does.

OK, here is the stupid reason it wasn't working. I had the actual WAV file down about 4 Folder Levels. Moved up to 2 and it plays perfectly. Moved it back down to a new folder tree that was four levels and it actually quit playing at the third level. Hope this helps anyone else.
