After upgrading to 12.04 from 11.10, the message indicator no longer turns green when new mail arrives in Thunderbird. I do still get the message pop-up, though, and I do have the Thunderbird integration plugin installed ("Messaging Menu and Unity Launcher integration"). Is anybody else experiencing this as well?

I have discovered a workaround for now that doesn't involve the KDE message indicator. First, I installed the FireTray extension for Thunderbird and set it according to my preferences. Then, I noticed that the new mail icon would cause the taskbar icon size to change, so in the FireTray preferences, I chose the following icon for new mail rather than the default: /usr/share/icons/oxygen/32x32/status/mail-unread-new.png
