    Re-installed 12.04.2 but Kernel is still 3.2.0-40

    Greetings,

Having had enough of all the bugs I have been recently facing. I decided to do a clean install using 12.04.2 the new lts that is supposed to have a 3.5 kernel. I did the installation and the updates but the Kernel is still 3.2.0-40. What gives?

    Separately:

    - I am still using KDE 4.8.5 I had 4.10 on my previous install through backports but I am hesitating to do the same now. Was backporting KDE 4.10 part of my stability problem or is it safe to upgrade?

    - During one of my crashes, Vinny suggested to rebuild my kde desktop
    Code:
    apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
When I did that, I had a beautiful wallpaper and splash screen using "Elarun". How can I get these? Do I have to upgrade to 4.10 to get them?

    Thanks,

    Michel

Kubuntu guys forgot that they have to include kernel 3.5 for 12.04.2 so 3.2 is shipped. If you want 3.5 quantal kernel you can install it:
    Code:
    [COLOR=#333333][FONT=Ubuntu Mono]sudo apt-get install linux-generic-[/FONT][/COLOR][COLOR=#333333][FONT=Ubuntu Mono]lts-quantal[/FONT][/COLOR]
Note that if you using proprietary nvidia or amd drivers you should update them to newest version before installing newer kernel.

I am running kde 4.10.2 without any problems (crashes).

And yes, "Elarun" is part of KDE 4.10

They Forgot? Where did you read that? I wish Steve or Vinny could shed some light on this matter. I don't want to screw up things anymore.

      Thank you for the information.

I found this explanation here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePango...eNotes/Kubuntu

Due to pressures of time, only Ubuntu (desktop, alternate, and server), Edubuntu, and Mythbuntu images use the enablement stack in 12.04.2. We expect to convert other flavours in 12.04.3.
They did not forget, they just decided Kubuntu will have it later. Meanwhile I did my installation twice because I thought I had used the wrong download only to end up where I was.

There are some reported problems with the Xorg enablement stack, see Launchpad bug 1134492. A bug in APT's dependency resolver has a high probability of breaking your system, see Launchpad bug 1130419. So hold off, for now, installing the Xorg enablement stack.

You should be fine installing the kernel enablement stack, however.

Thanks Steve. My fresh install is running without a glitch. All my applications are working fine, printers, samba, etc.. So this time I'm leaving it as is until the new lts comes along. Yes KDE 4.10 looks nicer but I'm not going to take any chance with a piecemeal approach to lts.

I am running KDE 4.10.2 on both my Precise installs without issue. About two weeks ago though, mysteriously X stopped working on both my systems (after investigating it appeared to have been un-installed somehow), but after re-installing xorg everything was back to normal. I can't say if it had anything to do with KDE or not, just FYI.
              Nowadays I'm mostly Mac, but...

That is strange. Are you using the XSwat or Xorg-Edgers PPAs? Mind posting your /var/log/apt/history.log on a pastebin someplace? I'd be interested in taking a look at exactly what else when on when X got nuked.

Like I said. I am not taking any chances.
