Upgrade from ppa now can't login from plasma

Hi, I have a stable system running 12.10 lts. A bunch of upgrades came in from the ppa and now I can't log in from the plasma welcome screen. I can log in at the command line though.

Can anyone advise how to fix?

I have run apt-get -f install but no change

This happened to me also. It turned out that I was missing a couple of packages after the upgrade so try installing
plasma-scriptengines and then kde-workspace if they are missing. That was what fixed it for me anyway.

Thanks. How did you find out those packages were not installed? I tried it rebooted and it hasn't worked. Thanks anyway.

Sorry it didn't work for you. I found the info I needed on the launchpad bug pages; maybe a bit more detailed than what I wrote before but probably not anything too different so I don't know how much use it will be. Sadly, I'm no expert so I don't think I can be anymore use - I just know it worked for me. Good luck!

Google for "launchpad bug 1121142" since I'm not allowed to post links yet.

great thanks for the quick response. I'll work my way through it. Going out now but I'll report back later.

Not sure if this will help, but I had a similar problem with 12.04 intermittently booting to command prompt and not gui. I upgraded my Nvidia drivers and it fixed all.

I found a likely candidate for where it went wrong:

              Code:
debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Passthrough
debconf: (Cannot connect to /tmp/qapt-sock: No such file or directory at (eval 24) line 3)
debconf: falling back to frontend: NonInteractive
              Unpacking replacement kdm ...
              Preparing to replace kde-workspace-kgreet-plugins 4:4.10.1b-0ubuntu1~ubuntu12.0.4.2~ppa1 (using .../kdm_4%3a4.10.2-0ubuntu1~ubuntu12.04~ppa3_amd64.deb) ...
              Unpacking replacement kde-workspace-kgreet-plugins ...
I tried to reinstall kde and that didn't work ...

I had a similar issue (I think...) after the 12.04 upgrade to KDE 4.10.2 and selecting the Light DM greeter. Turns out I had to select "Use An Empty Workspace" or something similar the first few times I logged in. Now it all works fine. This probably won't help but I'm posting in case it might. Good luck!

Obviously the gods of computing needed a rest. I selected the "default (previous)" option when I logged in and it has worked. I am relived if not really annoyed. Anyway, I will get over it. Thanks to those who tried to help.
