new installtion about perfect. problems only w. Konqueror + grub2

Hi

I did install Kubuntu LTS today and upgrade to 12.4.2.

All seems to run perfectly, excepted:

a. I have to complete grub.cfg with my other precedent linux'es but I don't know how to do it (I did select the installation that is not requiring some login nor password at kdm or doesn't use kdm at all, but it seems to pass also because that the selector menu of grub2?)

b. Konqueror doesn't work:

b1a. ebay texts are not complete (can be the cause of claims between buyer and seller in the future and is for that reason very unplaisant...

b1b. http://france2.fr/jt/20h doesn't work (but I have installed the proposed options for Konqueror!!! including flashplayer although I would prefer not to install non free software at all! I also did install gnash but after realizing that this public tv page does not work! not before!)
I did, of course, not install firefox (I don't like it at all because of it monopolistic position and appearance! save the liberty in the web please!

b1c. potlatch from openstreetmaps.org also does not work...

b2. what is to do to operate only with konqueror?

c. how to install a newer version of k-office or calligra (OpenOffice is a proprietary software!!!)?

a. I don't understand what you mean here.

b. Konqueror is relatively unmaintained. That said, a number of folks here use it, including me. You generally will get better results if you use the WebKit KPart for rendering. Install the package kpart-webkit then change Konqueror's default engine to WebKit (first page of the settings dialog). Note that even here, a few web sites won't work properly. I keep Opera installed for such occasions.

b1b. Flash has been abandoned by Adobe. The current version you can download is now a year old. Because of this, it hasn't received any security updates. Furthermore, browsers are increasingly likely to stop supporting the Flash plugin. If you absolutely need Flash, your only recourse is to install Google Chrome (not Chromium) which includes a built-in Flash binary maintained by Google. Don't even bother with Gnash or that other open source alternative. They are, alas, abandonware, it seems.

c. To receive updated versions of Calligra, enable the Kubuntu Backports PPA. To receive updated versions of LibreOffice, enable the LibreOffice PPA. K-Office is no more.

Why do you think Firefox has a "monopolistic position"? Firefox is, in fact, far from monopolistic. Take a look:

Thank you very much for this help! I did have problems with my first installation (the one needing no active login at all - this was proposed by the installation's cd, a full CD with about 700 MB) because my processor seems not to be fully supported in 12.04.2.
So I did reinstall 12.10 from minimal ISO (about 40 MB started live from harddisk using Grub after extraction of the files from the ISO). This installation works good.

a. it was not proposed to renounce to the login as in the precedent full CD and I regret it (because you have to wait for the login and wait again until KDE is ready to work! In the login free installation, you only press the hardware key to start the PC and go drink a coffee. coming back, KDE runs !) but I don't know how to avoid the login now...

(a1. I think that developpers don't think about the reality that a lot of people as I turns there PC a lot of time down and on daily, for example if the use a laptop on the way to different places in there house or the country! The starting time is an important factor of comfort or not! And it would be more acceptable, if all question would be done immediately and the answers saved by the computer if it can't use them immediately instead to force the user to sit only to wait that the computer is finished! Same thing with disk check! Since more than 10 years propose Windows OS's to do that AFTER the user leave his job, at the end, before the PC turns off... Linux developers have a limited sense of observation !!!)

b1. I think that Konqueror is working better in 12.10.
b2. The problem seems to be the integration of the plugins. And the most important problem would be to find the integration's rules considered if the user has only Konqueror (integration's rules independently from any mozilla or else browser)
b3. There are distros installing only free ware like Dragora linux or Parabola and the seem to offer equivalent possibilities to their one users. They install gnash and icedtea and it seems to work in the most situations.

c. Thank you very much! It was the right recommandation for me! I did do it and make actually a very big safe-update with aptitude (I did see that the installations system is using itself aptitude).

To configure automatic login, go to System Settings | Login Screen (LightDM). Click the General tab. Select Automatically log in and choose your user name.

That's what suspend (sleep) and hibernation modes are for.

The laws of physics place an upper bound on how fast electrons can move. However, over the past 10 years, disk capacities have increased greatly and motor speeds have increased. So while the time to do a disk check might seem the same as 10 years ago, remember that the amount of data to be checked is much greater.

OpenJDK and IcedTea are under active developent and work very well. Gnash -- it's dead.

Aptitude is not included in Ubuntu or its variants now. But, if you like it, keep using it. Now that apt-get and Aptitude share the same installation databases, use of one or the other is largely a personal preference.
