    Slow Login

Recently K12.04 has become slow to login. The dialog box where I type in my name & password pops up in 25 seconds or so, but I can't type anything into it and the mouse doesn't respond for another 40 - 50 seconds.

I read an earlier post with a similar problem, and installed the bootchart utility. The output of dmesg is attached. I'm guessing USB 3&4 are the problem. Any suggestions on how to find out what is wrong with them?

Maybe something wrong with the Chicony wireless devices plugged in?

Thanks for the suggestion. I really miss the keyboard lights for caps lock & number lock, so I'm planning to replace the wireless keyboard & mouse with USB ones. I'll see if that helps.

I replaced the wireless keyboard & mouse with USB ones, and removed the wireless dongle. It recognized my mouse right away, but still took forever to recognize the keyboard.

Finally I remembered that a couple weeks ago I forgot to remove a flash drive before shutting down. I put a flash drive in, booted up, and everything was fine!

Without the flash drive, your computer boots slowlky, but with the flash drive, it boots normally?

Sure, especially if the system is set to On Login > Restore previous session
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Right, if the previous session is expecting to find it, I suppose there can be a delay if the drive is missing. Hadn't thought of that. One of the first things I do on every new install is change that setting so that KDE starts with an empty session.

Thanks for mentioning Restore Previous Session. I hadn't noticed it before. I changed it to Start with Empty Session.

I have almost the same problem. Very long delay time for kdm login screen , but it happens only when I restart the computer. I can log out from KDE and back in without problem. Mouse is also frezing at the login screen after restart.

                    username@host:~$ tail -4 /var/log/kdm.log:

kdmgreet(1900)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): No time zone information obtained from ktimezoned
QInotifyFileSystemWatcherEngine::addPaths: inotify_add_watch failed: Filen eller katalogen finns inte
QFileSystemWatcher: failed to add paths: /tmp/2133516341/.config/ibus/bus

I have tried the solution with empy session.

I have tried to remove .ICEauthority

I have tried to remove .Xauthority

I have tried to insall ibus

I have tried to insall hal, but it dont seems to start - do I need it?

                    username@host:~$ sudo start hal:

                    start: Unknown job: hal

                    dbus is running

My keyboard a steelseries 6Gv2 - usb wired

My mouse is a simple Logitec - usb wired

This problem happens after a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.04 , I did not have the problem before (upgrade to Kubuntu 12.04 from previous version).

Should I post any more log files?

Thanks in advance for all support.

Where did you read that HAL might be a solution to your problem? Ubuntu and its flavors deprecated HAL several releases ago.

I just tested as it was in the repositories.

                        Don't care about that then.

The problem occurred before I install hal , and it obviously not function (hal) on my system.
                        Anny help?

These kinds of problems can be real mystifying. It might be useful to see a syslog. Since you've already tried reinstalling once, what if you try again, but this time with 12.10? Even though 12.04 is an LTS, there appears to be a disproportionately large number of desktop-related issues with that relese. Take a look at Launchpad bug 993187 for an example.
