I apologize for the late reply, but I've got it working again!!
james147, I connected the laptop directly to the router (through the ethernet port) and I run all of the four commands you wrote in a sequence. After I rebooted, I managed to log in to the graphic session!
Thank you very much! Thank you all, Dutchman, you as well. I did miss quite a few packages, as was evident once I connected the laptop to the Internet and run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.
I consider the problem solved!
