Extremely slow login after update in 12.04 Precise Pangolin

    Hello guys!

I installed Ubuntu and selected the KDE desktop as my desktop of preference. A few days later I updated everything that was available in the update manager - about 300Mib of updates. Sadly, ever since then my login startup has gone from about 22 seconds to over 4 minutes!!

The Ubuntu logo with the five dots below it shows for about 1.5 minutes, then the actual login screen is displayed, but no input is possible for another 1.5 minutes. Then, when I've finally logged in, it takes yet another minute plus to show icons and play the welcome tone. After this, everything works fine and fast.

Please help me here - it's very frustrating!

    Wayne

Is there a lot of disk activity during these delays?

Would you mind installing the bootchart utility, running through a reboot with this activated, and show us the graph that it generates?

With my KDE desktop missing (my other thread you responded to), I am now logging in to Unity, where I don't really know my way around. Could you explain how to do this, please? ....and yes, hard drive LED goes mad!

        Run:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install bootchart pybootchartgui
After you reboot, an image file will appear in /var/log/bootchart. Save the file someplace online (Imgur is good), and then link the URL here.

I may or may not be able to examine your details now...it's getting late here in Copenhagen, had a long day #1 at Ubuntu Developer Summit, feeling tired.

Oh, and also, please provide the output of
          Code:
          dmesg

I'm back. Hope your day wasn't as exhausting as yesterday!

Okay, so it seems the re-installation of the Kubuntu desktop has sorted the first two delays. Progress is sweet...! However, after entering my login details, I still have to wait about 1.5 minutes for the icons to appear and the startup sound to play.

So here's what you asked for:

Something's funky with your disk...quite a lot of read errors. Could be the drive itself, could be a cable. Let's take a look at your disk's heath statistics.

First, install the package that contains a utility to view a disk's SMART info:
                Code:
                sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends smartmontools
Next, run this command and paste the output here:
                Code:
                sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda

My hard drive has some empty unpartitioned space where Windows 7 used to be. Haven't done anything with it, 'cause I don't need the space just yet. Perhaps this could have something to do with the situation? My laptop is less than 3 months old and still under warranty. If there are problems with the drive, I should take it back.

But first, here are those statistics:

                  Code:
                  wayne@Wayne-CQ57:~/Documents$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda

IMO, that drive is failing. I would backup anything you don't want to lose and do it now. In comparison, I have a three year old drive that still shows ZERO for Raw_Read_Error_Rate, Reallocated_Sector_Ct, and Reallocated_Event_Count.
