The Mesa 3D DRI drivers for older graphics (i810, mach64, mga, r128, savage, sis, tdfx) was removed with version 8.0 and above. They can, however, still be used on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise distributions.
Thanks to tormod, the legacy DRI 7.11 drivers have been conveniently packaged:

I successfully installed them on Bodhi Linux 2.1.0 on an older rig with a 3dfx voodoo 5 5500. I'm now using the tdfx driver instead of software rendering (vesa).
I suspect they will work with most flavors of "Precise Pangolin".
