Just wrapped up the installation of the 32bit Kubuntu 12.04 on a 6 year old HP dv5000. Runs respectably well and the Radeon gives Stellarium 20-25 fps. That's "her" computer. The day before yesterday I installed the 64bit version of Kubuntu 12.04 on "his" new Acer 7250. They are both professionals (PhDs) in family counseling. Her computer was running XP but was bugged up. His old desktop was running VISTA and he couldn't get any work done, either, partly because of viri and a dying HD.
Now they are both running Kubuntu. Their primary tools were Chromium, Office and AOL. Now their tools will be Chromium, LibreOffice and GMail. Total cost for their OS: 0$. Total charge for my time: 0$. (I never charge family. In fact, I've never charged anyone since I retired four years ago!)"A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”
