Kubuntu 32bit vs 64bit

I have now run into my first problem: Wine. While Wine installs and works, I am having difficulty installing some programs under it that install fine under Gnome with Wine. The Gnome install, on a different partition, is 32bit, whereas the KDE install is 64bit. So at this point, I don't know if it is a kde issue or a 64/32 bit issue.

Does that Gnome install have the same version of Wine?

Yes, same versions of wine. Both are running on the same computer in different partitions and both are fully update 12.04 installs of their respective distro (kubuntu and ubuntu), same repositories, etc. The only difference between the two is the kubuntu install is 64bit and the ubuntu install is 32bit.

Just wrapped up the installation of the 32bit Kubuntu 12.04 on a 6 year old HP dv5000. Runs respectably well and the Radeon gives Stellarium 20-25 fps. That's "her" computer. The day before yesterday I installed the 64bit version of Kubuntu 12.04 on "his" new Acer 7250. They are both professionals (PhDs) in family counseling. Her computer was running XP but was bugged up. His old desktop was running VISTA and he couldn't get any work done, either, partly because of viri and a dying HD.

Now they are both running Kubuntu. Their primary tools were Chromium, Office and AOL. Now their tools will be Chromium, LibreOffice and GMail. Total cost for their OS: 0$. Total charge for my time: 0$. (I never charge family. In fact, I've never charged anyone since I retired four years ago!)

Maybe you could coppy the folders of those applications from your Gnome 32-bit install (from the ~/.wine/drive_c) to your 64-bit Kubuntu? I recently installed (what I think is) a 32-bit game and it ended up in the "Program Files (x86)" folder.

Been using 64 bit for years now, with zero issues most of the time, mostly in the beginning with non free video drivers. There is no reason not to go 64 bit, but there is also not necessarily any reason to wipe a stable system just to get 64 bit.

Same here, been using 64 bit for years as well with no issues. There's indeed absolutely no reason not to use 64 bit. Even with Flash, there's now a 64 bit version for quite a while already.
