My 10 year old grandson was our guest for three days. To plan for the event I set up a Minecraft server on my wife's Acer Aspire One 10" netbook. My Acer Aspire AS7739 connected to the server perfectly. When Tyler turned on his 8 year old gateway 18" the first thing I noticed was four lines running vertically on his display. The second thing we noticed was that he couldn't log onto the server, in either WinXP or Kubuntu. So, he and I played Minecraft on my Acer. I spent my time watching him play. Not exactly the way I wanted it to happen. While we were playing he said "I wish this were my computer."
His birthday is in two weeks. That will give me enough time to get a new 17" and set it up.
I ordered it on Thursday and it arrived the next day. I immediately began installing Precise on it.
It was a marriage almost made in heaven.
First, I made sure that UbuntuOne had all my important files, then I made DVD data files for local storage.
Booted a LiveUSB of Precise.
All appeared to work well, especially the NVIDIA GForce 650M video chip, which concerned me.
Also a concern was the Atheros 9462 wireless chip. NetworkManager appeared to work ok.
So, I installed it. It slide on nicely.
The first problem was NetworkManager. My wireless signal strength oscillated like a yo-yo, with frequent disassociation. I thought that perhaps the ath9k driver was as bad as the rtl8892ce driver for my other Acer 17.3" So, I installed the five Wicd programs and fired wicd up. After fixing a "bad password" problem, which was really a bad password and not left-over nm parts, wicd has been rock solid, giving me 100% 3 meters from the wireless and 85-90% 25 meters away, in the bedroom.
Sound through the speakers is a rich stereo and doesn't require a booster to watch a movie in bed. In fact, I have to turn it down.
The synaptics doesn't see the touchpad so synclient can't turn off the touch pad. BUT, the FN+F7 combo does it nicely, a feature my previous Acer 17"er didn't have.
The NVIDIA GForcce 650M gives me 55-60 FPS in both Stellarium and Minecraft.
All in all, Precise and the V3-771G make an awesome combo.
Tyler has a big surprise coming! My 6 month old Acer will be his new computer!
