    seg fault???

    Hi There,

    I get a seg fault with apt-get
apt-get update works fine but then I do
    Code:
    apt-get upgrade
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
And the same whe i try to install filezilla:
    Code:
    apt-get install filezilla
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
What's going on here? Help would be appreciated!
This after I just rebooted my system... and "Update Manager" in the tray gives my a Crash Handler message that says it closed unexpectedly, same with Muon... seems like it's pretty serious stuff...
    Thanks!
    Ron

IDK but you could try a
      Code:
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure libapt-pkg4.12
which is where that is installed from

      vinny@Vinnys-HP-G62:/usr/share/man$ dpkg-query -S libapt-pkg.so.4.12.0
      libapt-pkg4.12: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libapt-pkg.so.4.12.0

Hm, segfault in libapt-pkg.so, same problem that pablo173 reported.

Here's the version currently on my machine:
            Code:
            steve@x1:~$ [B]dpkg -l | grep libapt-pkg4.12[/B]
            ii libapt-pkg4.12 0.8.16~exp12ubuntu10.2
Checking /var/log/apt/history.log, I see that on 15 June, the version above replaced the prior one: 0.8.16~exp12ubuntu10.1.

            Try this:
            Code:
            sudo apt-get clean
            Can you use APT now?

Try removing the two *.bin files in /var/cache/apt and then rerunning sudo apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade (instead of just upgrade).

                      Tried removing /var/cache/apt/archives/lock.

Now Apper says, "The package download failed. Please check your network connectivity... E: Internal Error, No file name for libapt-pkg4.12".

                      and

Synaptic says, "E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the download directory".

Do you have the graphical package manager running/open? Almost sounds like you do.

Don't know what you mean by the "graphical package manager".

Are you running Muon or any other package manager from the Menu, and have a console/terminal open and running sudo apt-get?

Not running Muon -- Muon was not installed when I upgraded to Precise. I can run Synaptic from the Menu, but it gives the errors as noted above. I would run sudo apt-get from Konsole. BTW, the lock file that I removed was regenerated when I retried Apper and Synaptic.
