    High Disk Usage

    Hello all,

I am a heavy user of Kubuntu, and I am quite satisfied. However, a couple of times a day the system slows to a crawl and the drive light on my laptop is "hard on." This only began to happen recently. At first the issue seemed to be related to the rekonq browser. Then it happened while using Opera and Chromium. Finally it happened while having a konqueror session open. At this point I thought the issue was with the HDD. So I ran the smartctl utility and tested the HDD using the "long" setting and came up with no errors.

If I leave the system alone for about an hour, performance comes back to normal. I cannot run any utilities while the issue occurs since even the clock stops running until the system comes back.

I am running an HP Pavilion dv6 with quad core AMD 64 and 8 GB RAM. The HDD is 500GB 7200RPM.

I installed opensshd, and when the issue arose again, I sshed into my laptop. I saw various akonadi processes running. When I ended the processes with the kill utility, my machine was responsive again. Apparently, Akonadi stated after I ran KMail. I closed KMail and after about 10 minuted my machine was slow again.

Any ideas as to what I might to?

go to Kickoff(blue K left side of panel)>systemsettings>desktop search> and uncheck file indexing and mail indexing .

      total resource hogs

        Vinny,

Thanks, I what you asked. I still have the same problem. Is there another way to change the Akonadi settings, to limit the resources used by Akonadi?

I solved the issue. while viewing top via SSH, I noticed that only one Akonadi component was using too many resources. It was akonadi_invitations. What woyld happen is that CPU for this one component would reach 100%, and the process would use progressively more RAM until it used 80% of RAM--and I have 8GB of RAM! After it reached 80% of RAM the swap partition would begin to fill up--which explains the HDD light being hard on.

So I changed the Online=true setting on agent_config_akonadi_invitations_agent_0 to Online=false and rebooted. But there was no change in behavior.

Next I copied the existing agent_config_akonadi_invitations_agent_0 and agent_config_akonadi_invitations_agent_0_changes.d at files and restarted Akonadi. The files were re-created and the issue disappeared. I rebooted and started Kontact just to be sure.
